GH2 GH2 Corporate Shoot

Image looks super-sharp...what wide lens did you use? Looks great, no buts.

Was this shot @ ISO 160 or 640? :) Did you go all ambient for lighting?

ISOs were all over, but mostly 160-320 for interviews, then up to 800 for indoor shots w/ the 7-14. Used LED lights for customers, Tungsten w/ umbrella for CEO. B Roll is natural.

Did you add sharpness in Cinema mode? Just out of curiosity, do you pull the footage straight from SD card to editing program and edit, or do you do it some other way?

Sharpness set at -2. Used 5d to RGB and ProRes HQ

picture is very snappy

great microphone work - great direction too - your talent is relaxed and knows what they are saying - how did you get around all the aah and ums that usually creep in - lots of takes ?
great jib/ crane moves

perfect exposure on every frame-is 5d to rgb something you would say is a critical part of your workflow -i havent been bothered so far as its an extra step for marginal gain - or am i wrong there

the message really connects

all up a fantastic execution - well done SIR!

Let me know what you think

Some of the lighting looks really off, especially the one younger lady that has the light just beaming on her forehead. The lighting done on the CEO imo looks the best ( more natural) The wide shots look good for certain things but bad for other as it is causing SEVERE distortion all over the place. using that wide lens on people is a no no, warped heads is never a good thing. Audio sounded good, colors look real nice & the images really pop. One thing I didn't like though was how long the piece was, the same material over and over and over again. Also way to much camera movement, made the viewer feel like I was on a roller coaster or something. usually the camera moves to show location or a shot that calls for it, but it just seems like you were moving the camera just because?

My opinion is, be careful using that wide lens, relax on the camera movement and try to light more natural like you did the ceo. Overall solid job & I would pay you if I owned a business, but would have to direct you on how I would want it shot.

ps. Didn't really care for the fake sky either ( on a shot I saw) You have no idea how fake it looks & hate when directors/editors choose to use it. My final tip also is when shooting women you can use a softening filter on your lens or do it post just to make them a little more flattering. I constantly shoot women and no that razor sharp look where you can see every detail is a serious no, soften it up a bit ( think airbrush effect) and your projects will look even better. This is often done on older people to mask/hide some of their wrinkles.

Fake sky - i didnt pick it - probably because the motion blur on people in FG sold the shot

I really liked the use of the Wide lense - yes there is distortion - but the audience wont notice it - and it gives a feeling of space and freedom in the interiors / interviews that felt very free.
Were you handheld on the van shot "dolly" along the side of the van ? or Steady rigged ? or on a dolly ?

(time to go get a wide angle for my Gh2)

Lighting - especially on skin tones / interviews is such a subtle thing that we as film makers can over think it - all the exposure was great and again i think you would be hard picked to get any criticism from real world audience. I loved the bright exposure throughout the piece (i just dont get that undelit /underexposed gloomy look that so many music videos go for thee days)

can you share your lighting philosophy / set up with us?

Camera movement was great - again it brought a sense of freedom and space to the piece - i didnt think it was overdone at all.

Maybe the piece could have been 30 seconds shorter - or maybe not - i was fine with the length of it.

Certainly it wasnt perfect - but you can end up spending triple the budget to increase production value by 5% -i dont know the budget but i suspect that you stepped right up to the point of diminishing marginal returns
but for the budget you had i am pretty sure you over delivered. If i was the client and i was looking to spend 5g or so on a video i would be stoked with the result and potential of this piece to move potential customers to action.

i REALLY loved the way the personal relationships came across through the piece - it told a great story and if that was an Australian credit society i would be thinking about making the switch. They say that to you cant make a production honest unless you are emotionally involved (i have certainly found this to be the case on some Charity low budget pieces i have worked on) - how was your level of involvement with the staff - from the viewers perspective it felt like you guys really understood each other.

Thanks. Lighting was a bit tricky as it was run in gun between interviewees and Broll (5 people in 4 hrs) so it was a simple setup and used LED so I can run from one part to the other. The building had a lot of mixed light, warmer than tungsten with windows everywhere. Had a jib and a glidecam for the truck shots. Staff was great and very personable. IMO the video is honest and the customers generally are proud to be AH members.

Very nice!

Perfect for what it is!

I picked up on the girls shiny head too but then again, we can find problems with every mainstream blockbuster too... doesn't mean it's bad, just things to pick out.

Nice. And excellent use of the Jib and flycam.

As far as lighting- Don't listen to what anyone else says, I think it felt authentic. Which IMO is the idea here. This isn't a narrative drama, I like that it looked good but still real.

It depends on your workflow. Many NLEs convert color space in real-time to RGB, and don't necessarily do the greatest job. This is especially true of Quicktime-based NLEs like Final Cut Pro. 5DtoRGB uses some slower but higher quality color space conversion (something like lanczos instead of nearest-neighbor), which will result in better looking color and less "jaggies". However the benefits are much more arguable in modern versions of other NLEs, such as Premiere, which has been claimed to have a similar algorithm to 5DtoRGB natively, especially with GPU acceleration.

Really digging 5dto RGB but converted to HQ and it took UNGODLY TOO LONG of a time and not really worth it in the future so I'll try LT Pro Pres next time and see how it goes.

I've never heard of this CU, but I know it must be in the Philly area; I can hear that accent from a mile away! Great job here, made me want to be a member. =)
