GH2: Blue horizontal banding?

I think that this is sensor issue, not firmware only.
May be it occurs due to fixed noise removal process.
Bad thing that it is must be also present in all AF100s.

yes, but this is not minor.. not firmware, as you said. when you buy from Japan while in Israel that could be a problem..

It all depends on the conditions it shows up in... If it only shows up when shooting ISO1600 or higher, it's a non issue. If it also shows up in low ISO situations, it's going to be a huge headache for many of us...

Indeed. What ISO speed did you use? Do you want to try a repeatable test at different ISO settings to see if at some point it disappears completely?

this is on 3200.
tried on 1600 - the same ! :(
so what am i to do now??
this is no "minor" problem - i can avoid 3200, but 1600? come on..
if this is hardware issue then i'm f#$%ed.
is there a way to fix this in post?

Does it get less strong at 1600? (at 800?)

To be honest Roei, I don't think it's anything to really worry about. :) The ISO noise is worse than a slight band that you can only notice if you're looking for it. If you want to avoid the band, then I guess you could just treat it as part of the noise at high ISOs, because really that's what it is.

Unless it shows up on lower ISOs too...

In each and every thing you can find some minor problem.
That lingers in my ears. If that's the case and Panny fixes issues silently on future batches, who's willing to pay full retail price to become early adopters? It makes sense only to those who make money off by using it.

f#$%k.
also on 800.

it appears that this scarletwhore guy wasn't so wrong after all.
i appreciate the uplifting advice Matthew but the GH1 is quite rare in Israel as it is, so there's no point in waiting for proper import and service here.
tried writing to panasonic global service but i doubt i'll get practical help.

Oh dear I had a look at the 1600 iso  ...cant see it in 800 iso though? ....Looks like Panasonic have done it again!

Its very very hard to spot at 800. For me at least, I would never shoot a real world scene with that much noise, and if I had to shoot 1600, I would crush the shadows in grading. I feel ok about it.
Even if it was a hardware issue, it could be fixed with intelligent firmware updates (red does this all the time with old noisy footage). Question is, would Panny be willing to do 'Red style' leg work?

I can't see it on that ISO 800 shot. Only in the very first few frames, and after that it vanishes (as far as I can see anyway). I wonder if the GH2 has some kind of adaptive noise reduction.

thanks so much Sage for advising practically and logically.
i tend to get obsessive and depressed from this s@#$t.
so you're saying that crushing shadows on 800-3200 can work on problematic shots like these ?
(the only reason i bought GH2 is to start shooting an indie film asap, with some natural night shot, and dark indoor activity - so knowing the GH2 can take 1600 rather easily was a main advantage for me)
and i sure hope that Panny would try to minimize this mistake FAST-by any means possible (write this up - Panny agents !)

please tell me some more positive constructive stuff :)

Can't say I noticed lines/flickers in Philip Bloom's "Movember Gala Party" video, and that was shot in a wildly variable, mostly dimly lit nightclub environment.

Sure he used a relatively inexpensive, fast lens, but I don't think it matters. I don't mean to say this line/flicker issue isn't happening, but it doesn't seem to affect every camera or every shooter.

Owners of GH2 cameras with this issue or any other problem should contact Pansonic and ask them to fix it.

People who bought GH2 cameras from outside their region and who have no easy repair/replacement route to Panasonic, you have my sincere sympathy (really), but then again, this _is_ the sort of risk you take in this situation. That might suck, but sorry, that's just the way it is, and generally speaking it's not a situation unique to Panasonic or the GH2. And thank you very much for the heads-up.

Or, if you bought a GH2 with this issue from an authorized Panasonic dealer local to your region who are covered under Panasonic's normal product warranty, contact your dealer and/or Panasonic and ask them to deal with it. Best of luck for a happy outcome.
