GH2 GH2 battery grip impressions

Got mine from Ownuser based in Taiwan: http://www.ownuser.com.tw/e_mig_pgh2.htmlOverall it does what it's supposed to do. A few points:1) It doesn't have any "knobs" to prevent the grip from twisting. Just some rubber on top. Better than nothing. Might not bode well for sustained usage with follow focus etc. It'll twist eventually I'm sure.2) Battery meter works with original batteries3) I don't have any 3rd party batteries so can't test if they work4) I logged about 4hr40mins before the batteries gave out. Settings were HBR/25p, 640iso, I.Dynamic @ Standard. Aimed at TV with sound.5) If like me you invested in adapters that have tripod mounts, they just about fit while using the grip. In the pic below is the Nikon adapter for example.photo(2)0.jpgphoto(2).jpg

I too got just the grip.

I agree with the rotation potential, but its not a huge deal.

One of the best things about it: You can remove one battery, while powered on, and replace it, with NO downtime. 3 Batteries are ideal, so you can always have a fresh one to swap in and out.... I haven't tried any aftermarket batteries yet.

What is the difference between all those packages? It all looks like it is 'just the grip'...? Looks nice though!

so your saying there's no 1/4 20 screw on the grip to thread into the bottom of the camera? how does it stay attatched if this is the case.

No, pretty sure there is a screw. They are saying the whole thing can twist because there is *only* a screw holding it into place.

Looks like a good solution. Is the fake battery permanently wired to the base or can it be unplugged? Would be good to use it on a longer cord off the camera for time-lapse work.

it's attached via a coupler on a short wire. Refer to their website

thanks for the quick review. the potential twisting was my main concern also. a simple redesign with a radiused raised lip on either face would have easily fixed the twisting issue. guess they are just running of the old gh1 tool set for costs.

Hi all.

I am actually not quite sure if I posted here or on personalview on the subject of this grip.

But anywho... my last point was, as mentioned in this thread before, that the grip has no mean to stop or limit twisting the grip vs the GH2 (actually I am talking GH1 here, but it seems to not have improved).
Today I finally filed down the outer ridge on the top of the grip, after removing the not so good rubber thing on the top.
my GHs have a piece of grip tape (as on skate boards) on their bottoms, which is the best thing I´ve ever done. But my high hopes, that this damned battery grip would finally not move at all, didn´t come true. It´s better than ever before, yes. But full stop on twisting.....sadly still no no no.

I´d love some new ideas on that, especially with the GH2 in mind. I´ve tried various rubbers (amongst them some, that never failed me before), double-sided sticky tape, and now grip tape, which in every other case just rocks.

n8!

I know it sounds stupid but I did consider epoxy as a possible solution to the twisting problem.
Once glued thats it. It wont twist...ever

Yeah I have epoxy and had been contemplating it... then there's that horrible smell

what i would do is get a piece of 2-3mm plastic and then stick that to the front face of the grip where the ownuser logo is and raise it about 5mm or enough to overlay the bottom edges of the camera. then cut/file the round profile where the bottom lens mount is. this should stop twisting. (actually you can skip the cutting and just put two bits of plastic instead on either side) similar idea to what you see in quick release dove plates where it is curved to match the camera edges. its a simple design flaw that really lets the product down. like i said they obviously just re-used the old gh1 die cast tools for cost reasons instead of improving design.

actually i got another idea, 2-3mm plastic of the same profile that sits between the camera and grip that extends more at the front. heat gun 90deg to match profile of the bottom front camera. then cut excess off. now you can epoxy that mutha onto the grip. i might actually give this a go...ha i can model it up. anyone have experience with fabrication?

Hey guys,
I was looking into this battery grip and I was wondering if I could still use my DMW-MS1 mic if I have the battery grip??
Cause there is a wire connected where I plug my mic..
thanks

@RollingEntertainment,

That cable is for the auxiliary shutter release button of the battery grip. If you don´t want to use it you can just forget about this cable and use your mic as before.

Never mind the smell, what if you need to remove the grip? The epoxy ain't gonna come of, you'll have to grind it off lol
The smell usually goes away anyway.
I would actually consider this If I had a GH2 hehehe
