GH2 + Atomos Ninja?

Is anyone considering this option for 422 Prores recording? I have a Gh13 but am considering the GH2 as it outputs a clean HDMI signal, correct?

I haven't done very much research on this but it seems it would be a pretty great/affordable combo if it's feasible..

Much love in advance ; )

I have been in contact with the guys at Atomos and you are correct, it does output a clean HDMI signal, so you could use a NINJA!
Better than the canon dslr line!

Have fun

use a pix 240 (pricey i know) and you u might be able to do the conversions right on board. plus it gives you great audio, and serves a onboard monitor. lots of great options out there now

Really? Can anyone confirm this with footage yet? This will be amazing if it really works with no problems!

You guys are talking about recording right? Not just monitoring? And then if yes... Does anyone know if it records the GH2's 24p with pull-down (that you have to remove later) or if just extracts the 24 frames natively?

I'd like to know the exact process for the GH2 and Ninja. I want a 24p timeline as usual for how I work now. So if the HDMI is 60i then what is the process with the footage to get the 24p files?

ditto on this post ; )

I know it's easy to point to that avisynth thread with how complicated it got, but was he using this Ninja recorder?
Maybe they have figured out to get this working so it's actually worth the effort.

Has anyone, other than abelcine, who are a reseller so who can trust them really, gotten this combo working well and was the result
at least somewhat better than the camera's encoding.

I don't know that he was using the Ninja recorder specifically, but he does have a specific script for Pro-Res recordings in that first post, and the Ninja can record the GH2's weird 60I output so it should work.

We have been getting some results with the GH2, but not totally consistent. Some shots are stunning, and some are less so. Some are relatively desaturated and the jury is out on this as to whether we're seeing a more natural, unprocessed output on HDMI (sans the heavy sharpening and extra saturation possibly recorded internally by the GH2) or whether this is a degradation of the signal, which I personally think is unlikely, but am open to clear evidence. Either way, most footage I've seen looks pretty good.

We may also be seeing some differences between the European and US/NTSC region models. The pulldown situation is simpler in Euro areas where it's just 25/50.

We have some GH2s and are testing with them. We've already spotted a couple of things that we can improve. I doubt that we can fix the complicated cadence that is present in US GH2s in hardware, but there's always the AVISynth approach for that. My guess (at this stage) is that if you're prepared to do some software processing, you'll get really good images from the GH2 and the Nina. I've got some pretty stunning screenshots from GH2 footage recorded on a Ninja (in Europe) but they're copyright and I can't post them here, unfortunately.

We're still working on this and still talking to Panasonic.

Hi, I'm a PAL GH2 user shooting in 24P. I'm looking at the possibilities of recording the camera HDMI output.
Isn't the PAL GH2 HDMI output interlaced 50i and the Ninja will record it as it is, interlaced 50i. What PAL 25/50 pulldown are you referring to? You mean the Ninja can do that?
I thought if we want Progressive 25P we will still have to deinterlaced the Ninja recorded 50i signal with other software.
Doesn't deinterlacing compromised the quality of the video? So what are the advantages in this PAL GH2 Ninja combo?

Thanks for that response Dave. I'll say this...if you guys work out all of the NTSC GH-2 kinks then you definitely got my money.

Dave, if you could integrate that AviSynth processing into the Ninja, that would be utterly fantastic. If those unneeded frames could be dropped, and 24 progressive frames recorded, it would also increase the efficiency of storage space as well as codec efficiency. Most importantly, it would allow for drag-and-drop functionality. Is there a remote chance of this coming to fruition?

Best of luck and thank you for listening.

i was under the impression that what the gh2 sent out its hdmi port was NOT a clean uncompressed image in the first place... i could be mistaken.

I don't think we're talking about incorporating AVISynth into the Ninja. We just want to make sure that we record the output from the HDMI in a way that it is easy to demux in software (running on a computer). But we are looking at the output from the GH2 very closely to see what we can do to optimise it.

Just wanted to say that I've seen on another thread that what has previously been reported as a bug with the GH2's HDMI output - that it's unsaturated compared to Live View, is probably just that it is a more accurate reflection of how you've got the camera's controls set. It's far better to get a "neutral" output and have the flexibility to post-produce it than to have something that's already processed beyond redemption.

I think the output is clean (ie no viewfinder objects in it) and - by (HDMI's) definition, it's uncompressed. However, as is copiously documented on this forum, the pulldown does seem to exhibit a rather unusual cadence.

Man, this is so tempting. Should I get a GH2 now and expect David and Atomos to do a miracle with Ninja? It will be awesome if this marriage can happen.
