Cinemek's g35 adapter shipping june 20th!

John (Lee) that video you referred to earlier of CFXL footage was from Paul's first day shooting with the adapter. The folks over at Stillmotion shot these with the CFXL and EX1. I know Phil Bloom is also cooking up some footage with his collection of four Brevis units.

Total system light loss, (including the loss from a 50mm f1.4 lens) is still in the .75 stops loss range, with a usable aperture range approaching f5.6. Of course, if you need more light efficiency, CF1Le is about to be announced mod'd for the EX1.

Cheers,
Dennis Wood.

Yeah but there is still a video-ish look about it that I can't quite put my finger on.

There are some whip pans that show skew but oddly enough they are working like transitions!

Pretty cool actually.

I remember reading on the StillMotion blog that those whip pans were actually created in post (After Effects?) to make the video more energetic and to act as transitions. The guys at StillMotion use everything from polaroids to super8 to photographs in their SDEs. Here's the original article from their blog. http://stillmotionblog.com/?p=527

I haven't seen any videos from the Cinemek G35 that even come close to these from StillMotion with the Brevis. Thats one of the biggest weaknesses right now. People like Kholi Hicks, Philip Bloom, Charles Pampert, Ian Dudley, the StillMotion guys, and lot of other cinematographers have lots of great demo footage for the various adapters on the market, Ultimate, Extreme, Brevis, M2, SG Pro, etc. And these films show these adapters at their best.

Right now there's too little footage out there for a lot of people to decide about the benefits and disadvantages of using the G35 in their everyday workflow. I can only find around 5-7 videos done with it total!

They need to get that beta program up and running!

You should look at the videos on the Cinemek site. MacGregor did a bunch with the DVX a while back. I just used it again today and was amazed by both the image quality and build. After looking at the bokeh of the G35 I don't think I can go back to other adapters.

when are we going to get those static grain test videos??? :(

JohnLee, how do you find the static grain?

I haven't pushed the limits yet but I have not run into problems yet. As far as the dos and donts with the G35, I find them close to the same as those for the Movietube here:

http://www.camerafilters.co.uk/page164.html

I have never had hands on with the movietube so I can't rightfully say, but it seems to be a very comparable adapter...minus the flip...but you should never let that keep you from getting any adapter. You can make flip corections in many ways.

Johnlee,

I downloaded the source file and played it back on my edius timeline so i can view it on my CRT monitor.

The adapter seem VERY sharp and i couldn't see distracting grain. Please tell us more on the conditions and setting of that particular shoot (child and woman).

What were your camera aperture and speed? 24P? What about the 85mm lens you were using, full open all the time?

What was the time of day?

If only the manufacturer could post more info and current samples using various cameras this thing has potential.

Ted

Give Hauser & Co. some time, guys. It's been a decent length'a time as it is, but, they're workin' on it. I'm sure when they do choose more Beta Testers there'll be'a flood of footage comin' from all different directions along with information.

JohnLee -- Thanks for sharing. The stuff looks great. Can you tell us: What's your safe Lens Stop looking like? 4 ~ 5.6 before you see static grain?

Just realized that John shoots with the XHA1. Great Camera! Looking forward to some HVX200A/HPX170 footage with'a production model.

Sure,

XHA1 set t o 24f (who knows how it copares to true 24p).
I think I kept the camera shutter at around 1/48.
The 83mm was ope the whole time at f2
The time of day was about 1:00 pm. Iknow it's a bad time for lighting but we had tree cover so the lighting was quite nice.

i just want to see some f4-f8 moving footage of some skys... in HD

maybe i should aply to be a beta tester.. :)

You can forget about f8. Even f5.6 is pushing it with this adapter although you may get away with 5.6 depending on the shot. I would say that f4 is about the limit.

This information is based on testing a preproduction model. I do not believe the optics have changed much if at all from what I tested. I'm sure Jonathan will corroborate my findings.

That's probably true. Stay under 5.6 and you will be fine, even Jon tells you not to go farther than that. Even the Movietube guys don't suggest to go below 3 and they also tell you to minimize panning and movement and shooting skies. So figuring an adapter that is $17K has about the same limitations and quality, the Cinemek soluion is a great deal.

Great stuff!! Really nice work with your newest adapters Dennis.

Hey guys. Sorry for not being as active on here as I had hoped. We are shipping faster than I was expecting so nearly all my time is spent doing that. I posted a new thread in regards to the HD stop down footage. Its a common enough question that it's better that than be buried in here. Thanks!
