GH2 arrived. 1st impressions

BOLOGNA Im pretty sure these guys know the difference between the two cameras. At least I hope they do. That would be a day wrecker for sure, opening what you think is a gh2, and pulling out a g2. OUCHHHHHHHHHHH. The thought of that makes me cringe.

$699 :) You got a G2 mate, not a GH2.
Nope it's gh2. At least that's what the body says. I ordered it about two weeks ago and got it yesterday. I believe the pd price was $999 and after discout down to $630 with free ship. With tax back to $680. They keep calling asking if I know that the price don't include lens.

First impression on Body only:

Negative
#1. No in-body OIS is major, major pain in the rear with manual lenses...
#2. It's tough to hold for a period of time with the small Hand grip, maybe there's less discomfort with a pancake lens, but with a solid prime I get a hand cramp after a couple of minutes...

Positive
#1. Can produce very pleasing SDOF images indoors with a bright 50mm lens and the 1:1 crop mode is quite fun, but I need more time to compare to the Af100 footage I tried, which on first observation appears higher resolution in comparison...

Anything is better than handheld, IMHO. :D

To swivel the 7D LCD, you must move the entire camera at the same time, works great. And for zebras, this function ONLY works at the zoo! :) I have a 7D so I know this for fact!

For video, sure, but I'm betting it still creams the GH2 in the stills department. And I'm thinking I want both strengths for my film endeavors (movie posters and such).

To be honest with you, the colored moire alone on the 7D is a huge pain in the neck. I've used one for a year, believe me, I know the 7D inside and out. It's been great, but if I was buying today, I would seriously consider the GH2. In fact, I think my D90 shoots better pictures than the 7D. I'd rather be worried about my video looking better than my posters :) And I seriously think that the GH2 could handle poster promo work.

Well... I haven't used much still cameras and I can't tell for sure. My GH1 is my first serious still camera.

Wouldn't the cleaner high ISOs and higher resolution sensor of the GH2 make it even closer to a 7D?

Looks like a nice all-in-one package after all.

Edit:

Guess I'll take that as part of the answer... :D

And the only time that I had moire (not colored) in my GH1 was because of a fine grid fabric in a kid's costume that was so fine that even moired to our own eyes. The GH1 (and I guess the GH2) handles this very well indeed. I was shooting 720p for slow motion, I'm not sure which mode exhibits more moire though.

Don't even THINK about using 720p on the 7D most of the time, the moire is not as bad as the D90, but DAMN is it close! :) I could handle luma moire only, but the chroma issue on my 7D has ruined a lot of shots. In fact, we just went ahead and used it in our parody because it was a silly piece and didn't want to reshoot, but DAMN it bugs the hell out of me that it is in there

(Look at the scene with the opening of the gifts, ghost with the mask, watch the straps on his vest. You'll see the rainbow!!)

With the GH1 and GH2, we wouldn't have to deal with this problem. Although the GH13 is really the only contender, the GH1 was just too muddy. I've watched TONS of raw footage from the GH2 and I cannot see it being any worse than the 7D. In fact, if my work with the AF100 (which I've already ordered) goes well, I will probably sell the 7D and get a GH2 so I can use the crop mode for super tele shots when I need them (which it does AMAZING at).
