GH2 GH2 24p or weird strobe effect

thanks Graham.
well it looks exactly like Rigby's on my monitor. except Rigby shot has more contrasty view, and probably a bit different settings and different lens.
and my shutter test came out nice, so our cameras are fine (or at least that's how the GH2 works).
now we are left with three options:
- MTS files are sharper so tend to look less blurry. Rigby doesn't like it.
- the more contrasty your object's background, motions could turn less blurry (not certain about that)
- least logical option- his camera has something wrong. this could be easily clarified if he'll do the same test as i did.

so now we are all clear :)
thanks for giving the effort addressing the problem.

Ive got the same strob problem when i use a glidetrack.... i was shocked when i saw the resultat. My first thougt were it must be somting wrong with the camera it looks awful during pan or glides. whats the point to have camera which you cant pan or glide with? unfornatly i bought mine from honkong but with worldwide gurantee. Does this mean i can give it back tom my lockal panasonic office? I try to post a clip later on

don't think there's something wrong with the GH2, or yours in that matter.
it's extra sharp so 24p will always look a bit more "out there".
that's my conclusion. every footage i saw looks the same whatsoever. differences with the samples are ONLY camera settings, lens, movement and lighting conditions.

i think your consideration should be - most chances that the camera is fine. if you do send it back you might as well buy a different camera, a canon with softer image.
don't get high hopes for it being defected.
wanna be sure? download every sample you find on this thread and compare. i'm sure you'll have a better idea of the 24p on the GH2.

It depends on your monitor. LOTS do support it, especially with Windows 7, so it's worth a try (the results are simply stunning; it's like you're at the cinema). I have an LG too, and with XP I couldn't set it to anything other than 60hz, but with Win 7 it's as easy as pie! Even 24hz is possible, except that would be a bit pointless as your mouse would be all 'filmic', and provide no benefits to motion rendition. ;) Either 48hz or 72hz is ideal (I'd personally go with the latter for smoother mouse movements etc).

I have no idea how to do it with ATI cards though (I'm an nVidia guy), but there will probably be a way. Do a search on google for something like 'ATI custom resolutions', or similar.

Good luck.

Matthew, just to let you know i asked about that on windows 7 forum.
they told me that forcing the monitor ABOVE it's highest HZ, could damage it for good. lower is fine.

yes jordan your answer is confusing..
i watched the trees file. i think it's the same as Rigby. when you pan slowly, no strobe. when you start to be to fast, it starts to strobe.

so - did you mean your footage does not suppose to strobe ? or you meant that it DOES strobe?

and of course the graphic b&w stripes strobe, yes.

that's what you meant? or i didn't understand your reply?

Sorry, long day yesterday! The point i was making is that this file from frame to frame, doesnt strobe, look at the 2 or 3 frames next to each other, use a video scope, histogram, whatever, they are more or less identical, the "problem" is a result of the way the footage was taken
(there seems to be no motion blur) and also the way monitors work.

https://files.me.com/jordancadby/u03llu.mov

Here is another movie, which hopefully proves there isnt a strobe in the actual footage, all i did was track the footage and lock it in place, if the motion was un even then this wouldnt look smooth, and if the picture was strobing then it would be obvious in the image... but to me it isnt.

which in conclusion... blows... cuz lets face it, weather theres a perceive strobing or an actually problem in the camera.... the result is the same, crappy pictures.

Prehaps this is a limitation of our cameras! something we need to work around. annoying i know!

jc

ps...

SORRY FOR MY INCONCLUSIVE VIDEOS yesterday! I was trying to point out what the above one hopefully does. MY BAD!!!

huh, nice test with locking the motion. interesting. not sure what can we make out of it but yea it rules out the strobing. i don't think there's something wrong with the camera.
actually this footage motion tracking fx makes a very creepy atmosphere if it was a movie shot :)

Yea it clearly shows the motion is smooth and the images is consistent... But its a shame i could prove it! cuz its not much of an ask is it really, a simple uncomplicated pan! FREAKING TECHNOLOGY!

To be honest, i wouldnt of thought twice about the pan and probally have gotten the footage home and discovered the same things!

Grahamh, thanks for the info.

So, are you guys coming to the conclusion that this is normal behavior for the GH2? I can only speak for myself but I've never owned a camera that reacted to pans in such a way.

Word

Hey Rigdy, Ive never seen a pan do that no. I must admit I have bearly had chance to play with my GH2 since i got it... Ill have a go at trying to recreate the problem with mine,

do we agree it seems to be the shutter speed thats creating this problem?

Ie no blending/motion blur between the frames?

JC

oh dam just realise... i dont have any trees by my house... FAIL. :)

shutter speed is fine..
Didn't you see my hand test frame grabs?
Varius shutter speed shows different kind of nice motion blur

Jordan,

Yeah, I would agree it's a shutter speed type issue. I almost seemed like something was overriding it. My GH2 never seemed to change speed in manual mode. I got mine in December and shot a bunch of indoor footage with it. At the time I remember thinking to myself that the camera seemed a little weird but never looked into it. I pulled out a clip from that project last night and I see the pulsating thing going on even in static clips. It's very minimal, and nobody would notice it, but it's there. I had some people swing by and I showed them some clips from my GH2 and they were like " WTF is going on? " Some of them were films guys and some weren't. But they all saw it and agreed the footage was unusable. That's all I need to know, really.

In pal land few use 24P 24P looks poor from any cam here ,there is 50i and 720P ,720P is the best 720 i have seen, regarding canons i had a T2i/550D 720P looked like dvd and 25P ok as long as you did not pan ,far more pan judder than my GH2s 720P or 50i,i am a bit confused it was said the ois can only be shut off in photo mode but rigby you say you shut yours off.

Rigby, ok maybe your cam is not really ok..
But I just want you to download Graham's tree pan shot
And tell us if it's the same as yours... Please

word

yea Rigby that shot cant be used... theres a problem with your camera if you cant get it to lower the shutter speed to something you can use, Definatly.

its almost like you camera was stuck on shutter overide or sumthing...

If you think the camera is f*d then yea you should send it back!

i really need to get mine out more, and playing with it. If i keep reading these forums ill be p*ssed off with the thing before ive made anything on it! :)
