GH2 GH2 24p or weird strobe effect

Hello,

Do any of you guys feel like your gh2 strobes or pulsates when you pan? I understand the issues of shooting 24 frames a second. I also realize that you need to pan at a proper speed. But, I really feel like there is something weird going on here. Oh, it's also not OIS on the lens since the 14-42mm does not have that. I've attached a link to a file right from the camera. Yeah, I'm panning too fast and at the end I get distracted by a flock of geese but even slower pans look like this. Maybe it's the combination of dark trees and white snow? I don't know.... I've never had this issue with any of my other cameras. Just the normal 24 frame issues. I can't put my finger on it but something just doesn't seem right.

The 14-42 does have OIS. It just doesn't have a physical switch for it. Check in the menu and make sure it's off?

You are not the first and will not be the last to report this. There are many who are experiencing the same problem as you are and all GH2s have it. It's just that some people are more sensitive to it than others. I have to admit that I notice it too and I am therefore underwhelmed by the motion characteristics of MY GH2. I really think this is something that a gh2 hack would help a lot with. I'll try to start doing some tests and try out the 80% speed option. If I find anything interesting, I'll report back.

Thank you Awelgraven. You know, somebody told me that lens did not have OIS and that just stuck in my brain. The camera was set to mode 1. I hope this solves the problem but I have noticed it with old Nikon lenses as well. Also, does that setting get locked in even in movie mode? The reason I ask is because it's grayed out in the menu under that setting. I will go out and try it again in the morning and report how it turns out. Please let that be the answer! I really want to love this camera. Thanks for the help guys.

You only have access to the OIS switch in picture mode. It doesn't show up in movie mode. But it's troubling that you see it with a manual lens. Anyway, try it.

Yeah, I've noticed it a lot too. My theory is that the picture in 24p is too sharp for its own good, so edges sort of 'pop' in and out. I've experienced the same kind of weird strobing when I turned my HF100's (which has really good motion rendition in 25p) sharpness to the max and added some more in post. Maybe you could try shooting with reduced sharpness and noise reduction, with a soft lens? Also, what shutter speed are you at? Needs to be 40 or 50 for smooth motion, really.

my conclusions at the moment:

it's does relate to the sharp image (so it would also be on AF100 for example)
the extra stutter is indeed more noticeable while playing the MTS files than, let's say, an official HD feature.

HOWEVER - there's a world of difference when i watch the same files not on my pc but through Popcorn 110A and Epson EMP-TW700.
a lot more finer 24p playback and minimum stutter.
i still investigate the PC playback- maybe it has to do with - Nvidia GT8600+ crappy monitor (only 60Hrz) + PAL land.

i'll be glad for any new tips on that.
thanks.

Are you using Windows 7? It's easy to make a custom refresh rate (48hz) which will make 24p files look smooooth(er) (the time between frames will be constant, not variable as in 60hz). You'll most likely be blown away.

I noticed that the MTS files from the GH2 are very dependent on the software player you are using. For me at least VLC (my normal preferred player) is terrible, I actually find Windows Media player does a far better job.

Matthew's suggestion to put it to 48hz (or any other perfect multiple of 24) is a good one if your monitor supports the refresh rate. If you want a monitor that can support true 24p playback look at the 120hz monitors which are designed for 3D games, or an easier solution would be just to use a TV as a monitor that supports 24p, typically 32inch and upwards.

To me 24p pulldown stutter doesn't annoy me on the computer as it is still fine for editing, final viewing always takes place on a TV or projector

thanks !
can recommend me of a decent budget monitor to support this?
(don't forget i still want a 24p native motion look and not videoish 120Hrz motion..)

What kind of budget have you got? The cheaper ones are 22" and don't have full 1080p resolution. That videoish 120hz motion is just frame interpolation, and no monitors that I know of support that, besides it can always be turned off on all TVs

Did you try Windows Media Player first? it's a far cheaper option :)

first of all, i just did a check on WMP and it DOES show less stutter :)
so for quick viewing, problem solved.
but anyway i do want a new HD monitor for around 400$.
is there any option that would somehow also solve the Hrz matter?

thanks!!

Firstly you can follow this guide
http://www.nvidia.com/object/custom_resolutions.html
and try to enable a 24hz multiple on your monitor ie 24hz, 48hz, 72hz.

Secondly if you want a monitor that will definitely support 120hz goto this list
http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-requirements.html
All these monitors support 120hz for Nvidia 3D which is a perfect multiple of 24hz (120/24 = 5)
I can't voucher for the quality of any of them inparticular, best to read reviews of them around the place. I personally would choose the one with the widest color gamut and best true contrast (alot use artificial contrast boosting settings). Also you might need dual link DVI capability to get 120hz but they should all support other 24z multiples that can use single link DVI. Displayport could be used but your current GFX card won't have that port.

Either that or get a TV, like a 32" Samsung or Sony LED, these both I'm pretty sure support true native 24p. I personally prefer plasma or DLP when it comes to TVs though, they are more expensive and more fragile. Still really disappointed SED display technologies never took off(they were a next gen CRT)

I observe the same problem with my GH2, and I have no idea, how to fix it really, but the shutter speed has an important influence if its strobing or not.
1/50 is probably the best shutter speed. Higher, like 1/250 is worst for the movements.

Okay, so it went out this morning and tried again with the same results. Stock lens with the OIS turned off. The shutter speed was set to 1/50 and I tried others as well. The clip I've attached is a pretty fast pan but it still shows up at correct speeds. I am aware of the issues of 24p and have owned many different cameras. This issue may seem to fall under the " That's what 24 frames per second looks like " category but I still feel that this camera takes it to the extreme. I must say this is very disappointing. I had high hopes for this camera, and yes I know it costs a thousand bucks, but I feel like this could give people seizures if they had to watch it on the big screen. Still, I hope I'm doing something wrong.
