GH2 100Mbps Flow Motion Patch v1.0 with 50Mbps File-Spanning

lpowell, thanks! I've actually been holding off on applying a GH2 patch until you produced one. I used your GH1 patch exclusively and trust your work.

On another point; you're a great communicator (I don't often give that complement).

Thanks again!
David

Hats of lpowell!!! You bring so much to our community!!! Thanks for answering the questions about the best 24P GH1 hack earlier in this thread....I'll have to load that to my GH1! Cheers Buddy!

I tried rendering out a clip in premiere pro and it seems to have gotten rid of the artifacts but the image is very juttery on a fluid head. That may or may not be my pc bogging down. Going to try it on another pc and see if that is the problem. By the way, this was 24p mode, shutter of 50, iso was 800 I believe but I also tried 1600 and it did the same. Tried two class 10 sd cards, Lexar and Sandisk. I think that it may have been an issue with VLC player.

I think that it may have been an issue with VLC player.
The VLC player does sometimes have difficulty playing back MTS files produced by Flow Motion. I have tested it thoroughly for reliable in-camera playback and rendition within Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects CS 5.5. Desktop playback, however, depends on a variety of factors and cannot be guaranteed.

I have just installed this version of your hack, thanks a lot for all your work!

I just don't get one thing with it: In H mode I have about 20 minutes of recording time on a 16gb sandisk card, while in L mode I have over 2 hours of recording time on the same card... If the L mode is 50 mb/s instead of 100 mb/s, shouldn't L mode give your about 40 minutes of recording time since it's half the bitrate?

I am probably missing something really basic here =P.

100Mbps is the maximum Flow Motion bitrate for 24H, FSH, SH, and HD video modes. 50Mbps is the maximum bitrate for 24L, FH, and H video modes, and guarantees reliable 4GB file-spanning on standard Class 10 SD cards.

In practice, the average bitrate will vary depending on lighting conditions and scene complexity. The AVCHD encoder in the GH2 will use only as much bitrate as it needs to encode video at the quality levels that Flow Motion specifies.

GH2 v1.0E 100Mbps Flow Motion Patch Executive Summary...
....
....

* V1.1 will feature customized quantizer tables combined with 25p HBR support.

How can version 1.0 feature HBR results in version 1.1 ?

Just a quick report:

This hack works well also with Sandisk Class 6 30 mb/s cards. Other hacks with 88 mb/s stops recording after a couple of seconds with the same card. This hack hasn't this far stopped recording a single time with the class 6 card.
This is due to the variable bitrate I guess...

This hack is the one I will stick with, amazing quality, stable, and also works with ETC! Can't wait for the 25p, I need it so bad!

Sorry if my implication wasn't clear. What I'm saying is that once Vitaliy updates PTool to support Panasonic's v1.1 GH2 firmware, I'll release an updated v1.1 Flow Motion patch that supports HBR 25p and 30p video modes as well.

I was impressed reading that last part too. It makes me feel like you are ready and will have the new patch as soon as new ptool hack will be released. As I still remembered there was a thread named " Where is Ipowell ". To all "here he is " now. Thanks Ipowell for your dedicated work.

It will probably take some work to fully optimize the v1.1 HBR video modes in Flow Motion, so I'm not expecting that to be ready as soon as PTool support for firmware v1.1 is released. However, each time PTool is updated, I plan to verify that the current v1.0 Flow Motion continues to work as intended, with both v1.0 and v1.1 versions of Panasonic GH2 firmware.

Does this take into account the new switch in the 20.02 version allowing 720p modes WITH B frames allowing you the b-frame prediction method? Is this a good thing?

The 720p B-frame patch is a newly developed experimental feature which will require further testing. The 720p patch in Flow Motion v1.1 uses a GOP-6 P-frame format with a significantly finer quantizer parameter than in Flow Motion 1.0. Try it out, it produces some of the highest quality 720p videos that I've seen.
