Gh1's lowlight weakness is discouraging me and letting me lean towards the t2i

So should I still go for the GH1? or T2i? I guess if I asked this on the Canon side it be different as well.lol

Also, where are you located JoeJITSU? Reason I ask is, if your in US, you'd have no problem with adapters for lenses for whatever brand.

If your in some parts of europe or asia like i am, its hard to get accesories for the GH1, Canon and Nikon lenses are easier to come by in this part of the world.

Also, canon and nikon lenses/accessories have better resale value than those of the GH1.

Assuming IQ wise all things are equal, I'd go for the canon.

Probably. I have the GH1 and glad I didn't wait for the t2i only because I've shot so much, so quickly, i don't mind i had to pay a $400 more. Or rather, I can live with that fact.

The fact that the gh1 can take almost any lens is true, but you lose any Autofocus features when you throw on a cheap Canon FD or Nikon lens. So its more like "the GH1 can take any lens, BUT..."

Then there's hairsplitting differences at this point:

Image quality: Both look Great in video. If you want to geek out, you can argue over which is greater.

LCD: GH1 has articulating lcd, t2i does not.

(Well, not so hairsplitting) the t2i has a 12 minute recording, the gh1 records until out of memory. You have to ask yourself if the 12 min. cap is an issue you're okay with.
-other little things: you can get a battery grip for the t2i.

i dunno, i kinda think the t2i is the champ right now, just because of it's dedicated lens selection. I'm glad i can use a canon fd 50mm f/1.4 that cost $40, but i'd rather pay a few hundred for a Panasonic lens that can autofocus.

sidenote: I don't consider the Panasonic 20mm a good portrait lens. It ends up being 40mm with the crop factor. On Canon's rebels, their 50mm becomes 80mm, which i think is much nicer for portraits, despite the fact that there is distortion correction in the GH1. The 20mm portrait shots i've seen, still look a little funny.

I really do appreciate everyones feedback and info on both of the cameras. I live in las Vegas so its fairly pretty easy for me to get cheap but quality lenses. I am also still debating on waiting a couple more months for the Gh2. Only problem is I have some clients wanting to shoot some commercials for them and I am in a way being rushed.

I probably will. I'm probably going to have to go with the T2i. Sell it in a couple months....check out the GH2...see what thats all about....then go from there.

Thought I'd just throw this in there. GH1 lowlight, street stuff is available light, everything else is practicals and some low-wattage film lights.

get a fast prime and your low light will be close to the same as all the other dslrs...except the 5dmkii.

I don't feel like the 5D performs as well as everyone says in general. I have been using the footage more and more and I find it to be soft and low resolution and even noisy compared to the GH1 footage in similar conditions.

Seriously, who are the people shooting under bridges at 3 in the morning who need that level of light sensitivity. Look, filmed a concert last night- the last performance of my high school's (HSPVA in Houston c/o 97) choral conductor, and I wish I had some ND's it was so hot in there.

VEGAS?!?!

Go to NAB MAN!! Get a taste of EVERYTHING!!!

Report back!!

BINGO ... ya that about sums it up. It's very hard to get any real concise advice either way without peoples Brand bias becoming involved.
None of these cameras currently will do everything needed at the best quality contrary to what some will say.
I have a GH1 ( for the second time round ) and a 5D which both I love and to be honest the most impressive thing I have seen recently was the lowlight performance of the Nikon D3s in the Zacuto shootout part 2.
My point ... clearly there is no winner here, yet. Pick your poison and get shooting and be prepared to change camps when the next thing comes. These aren't family members we are talking about, they are cameras. :)

Gotcha.
I am almost positive to go with the T2i...mostly because if I plan to sell it by the end of the year to get something better I know that it would hold its value better than the Pana. Thats my thoughts.

I usually take into account resale value when making a purchase, but in this case I am making the choice based more on my needs. I'm in the same boat but have decided on the GH1 over the T2i and here's why:

I want to be able to shoot for longer than 12 minutes at once.
No overheating should I want to shoot long sessions.
Articulating screen
Better 720/60P which is what I would probably use most for smooth slomo.

Those reasons have made me decide on the GH1 which I will be purchasing this weekend. I could have gotten the T2i for less, but I know id' be irritated at the 12min limit and overheating.
I basically want a video cam with better DOF and more manual control than the typical prosumer video camera.
That would be a GH1.

well in my case Im not too worried about the 12 minute shots.
As far as over heating goes ..you might want to check this out:
http://www.vimeo.com/9924959
and for the 720/60 footage Ill leave that up to my HMC40. Thanks for the input

Um.. Was that example of a T2i overheating supposed to ease my fears? In fact that just made me wonder why anyone would even consider the T2i over a GH1 unless they only shoot short segments.

Thanks for keeping me in the GH1 camp...
Um...No. There were rumors that the T2i overheated after 30 minutes. This was for 1 hour 18 minutes. For my purpose....DOF.....I won't be using it for that long. I will be using the HMC40 instead. Plus I'm basically going to sell the T2i and later buy the Gh2. Gh2 is going to have a "dual exposure" sensor which will leave the Gh1 and T2i in the dust. :)
