GH1's capable of feature films yet?

well i'm not saying it will take a lot of time 'till we get that -"good enough" budget camera + easy workflow..
but it's just not there YET.. hope it WILL be in a year or two (at least until 2012)
;)

and Blackout- of course real film development and printing is useless today..
(i'm ok with RED- but i want the prosumer compact version- the abandoned poor SCARLET, or every similar product that would come out)..

Keep waiting while we all shoot beautiful "film", I am sorry "video", with the current crop of cameras. First of all a person has to be trained and knowledgeable about the difference between an interlace and progressive video. If you can't tell the difference there is no use having a discussion.

Sorry... I was trying to change the pictures and I deleted the whole message:

Film is dead. It's dead. It's on it's last breath like a sick fish in a shallow dirty pool. Accept it. All the old school elitist DPs who insist 'you must shoot actual film' will either convert to digital or be out of jobs within 10 years.

As it is, yes, Hollywood is still shooting 35mm film with Panavision cameras, but they are all working at TOP SPEED to get rid of film and go fully digital. As it is, all movies are scanned at 4k or 8k and then color corrected and printed back to film, but even that is ending. I am hard pressed to find actual film projector theaters in NYC, one of the film meccas of the world.. I have to go to little theaters. All of the major chains on 34th street and 42nd street have converted almost exclusively to 2K digital projectors, and some have 4k. Personally I hate it because most are using 2K projectors and I can def tell that the quality is not as good if I sit too close. I watched Avatar in real3d (2k projectors) and real film IMAX 3D, and IMAX blew it out of the water.

but... I am a pixel peeper. The audience is not. Half of the films right now that are being shown never even touched film! They were rendered out of a computer and then are projected digitally from a hard drive file in the theater on a digital projector. Basically you are watching super high end youtube on a big screen with other folks. I wouldn't be surprised if google/youtube makes a grab at opening up theaters.. they have the money to do it.

Toy Story 3, Shrek, UP, a billion others didn't touch film.. consumers (ehhh I hate that word...) *ahem* cough PEOPLE are forgetting what 'real film looks like' because the DVD or BLU-RAY they buy was a straight digital transfer and never touched film.
Grain? What's that?

Let's not even talk about the disgusting practice of every HD tv now that takes your 24p dvd or blur-ray and adds 'smooth motion interpolation' to bring it up to the speed of 60p which makes it look like a soap opera or doctor who episode and ruins the production value - but a new generation of kids are being trained to 'LIKE THAT' and think 24p looks too slow! Oh my god... I'll kill them! Directors are freaking out about this except for James Cameron who wants movies to move to 48 or 60p. Ewwww!

Let's not even talk about "LIE MAX" this idea of putting crappy 2K imax digital projectors in major chains and upselling you another 8 bucks to watch the movie when it isn't even IMAX.

There is only one REAL imax theater in NYC and it's at Lincoln center - I mean the REAL imax with a HUGE 4:3 imax screen (imax is NOT 16:9 widescreen) and there is no point seeing an imax film if the damn thing wasn't SHOT on imax negative film and projected on imax FILM projectors - but it's a dieing thing and hard to find. All of these stupid movies are released in IMAX now and they were shot on 35 or digital... what the hell is the point of seeing a film degraded by blowing it up to a format it wasn't shot on? It's all marketing gimmick 90% of the time to squeeze a few more dollars out of you after you buy your $22 popcorn, and the audience is buying into the bull except for a few people who called them out on it and posted "LIE MAX" websites showing all the sites that are not showing true imax film.

Liemax cruddy 2K digital projectors:

A REAL Imax film projector:

Very few of the real ones around..... HUGE difference in image, the film negative is 70mm x 48.5mm almost 4 times the size of 35mm.. it's like shooting with medium format and the projector is a frightening beast that looks like something out of 2001 a space odyssey. Personally I love that...a projector that looks like it could shoot down a planet... but in 10 years you'll be able to buy one on ebay if your truck can haul it. Not to mention IMAX used to have strict standards for the biggest screens ever to appreciate all that extra resolution and detail.... but that's all dieing now.. sadly... do audiences know or care? Mostly no.

All the skills that were used in film making with actual film can transfer over to digital 'movie' making I guess will call it since it's no longer 'chemical film' and the sensors and technology are improving at such a rapid rate that soon (you can nearly do it now) you will be able to get every bit of latitude gamma and look of old chemical film and even way beyond, but with the immediate convenient workflow and fast transfer of digital. I am sure that even the digital IMAX cameras will catch up to and surpass the huge film ones. it's not there yet, so watch original shot IMAX movies in real IMAX theaters while you can... but it will get there. That is the way things are going.

Actual chemical film is dead and will probably only be in museums and little art houses within 10-20 years, probably a lot sooner...

but wait, the world explodes into infinity in 2012 so it doesn't matter.

Plus, it's too expensive to shoot film unless you're a studio.... and even they soon won't be doing it anymore.

The sensors will catch up and beat film... everyone's sure of it. Anyway this is all a hologram you don't even really exist how you think you do. You are a projection right now, rendering your own imax version of reality in your mind....but let's not get all existential.

I digress.

The GOOD side of this.... suddenly your GH1 competes a LOT more than you thought! If all major movie theaters are projecting on 2K projectors... you're not far off. Yeah yeah, that old cranky ASC DP guy who reads "American Cinematographer" will be cursing under his breath and mocking you to his other 90 year old buddy, but the other few hundred people in the audience won't have a clue and will be enjoying your film if you did good work, shot it well, lit it well, acted it well, recorded the sound well, and told a damn good story for a change!

know what?
i think i can settle with a development of a codec with enough bitrate, stability and ease of use for now. too much to ask?

You mean if I light a match and keep my finger over it I'm not REALLY getting burned....cool....

EDIT: OUCH!!!! Well...there goes that theory!!!:Drogar-Mad(DBG):

I had this exact argument with a Buddhist once. In order for me to answer you, you would have to define what "really" meant or what "real" is, and no one as of yet in all the universe has been able to do that - except oneself - meaning... 'you' are definitely having this experience, whatever it is... and that is the ONLY thing you can prove. You can't prove I am real, or fire, or imax, or the GH1, or anything else..

So.. you may ignite up and burn away.. but I say the consciousness would stay, in some other form. But this is the GH1 forum not the philosophy forum so I'll leave it at that.

+1,000,000

IMHO, This represents the single worst side effect of the rapidly moving technological advances of the digital age... that and After Effects tutorials from 9 year old kids.

Just saw Chris Nolan's Inception on both a digital projector and on a real imax screen. It was that good I stayed and watched it again. Amazing film that is like The Matrix, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Thirteenth Floor, Existenz, to the power of 10, and without people having to look all cool and gothic.

Awesome philosophical movie, but my only critique was that it's LOADED to the hilt with unnecessary action sequences that you can see they clearly put in so if 'people are confused' which they will be, they can see gun fights and things blowing up and things falling in super slow mo. Kind of how the last two matrix movies lost the vibe and message of the first and went all to action visual style.

Yet still, even with this flaw, the movie is phenomenal and not to be missed.

Looked cruddy on a 2K projector compared to the IMAX, but looked ridiculous on max unless you were in the LAST seat because it wasn't shot on imax it was blown up so if you sat middle row or closer you see film grain film grain film grain.

Probably best to see it on a real 35mm print how it was shot, but those theaters are becoming hard to find in NYC. All amc and regal have gone digital in their main screens, and now every god damn movie and it's mother is coming out in 3D whether the movie would warrant it or not.

Real 3D and Disney digital 3D both suck imho.

Imax 3D is amazing and not even comparable to the prior two crapola formats.

A lot was shot on 65mm film and projected in it's native 2.20:1 aspect ratio. You aren't losing much clarity. And at what point has it been a problem to see film grain? That's a strong part of the look if used right in my opinion. When a film get's bleached bypass that film grain really adds to the look.

Didn't look like it was shot on 65mm. I've seen native imax shot stuff & the batman version that had 'imax sequences' which I thought was silly.... shoot imax or don't.

Again... I saw the gh1 with the avchd bit rate as maxed out as I could get it, projected on a 10,000 lumen Panasonic projector (one of the crazy priced PT series can;'t remember the exact model now) on a regular sized cinema screen and it was pretty mind blowingly good.
I sat a little bit further back than middle row.

Would I project 2K on an IMAX screen and expect it to look good? No.... but even 35mm film on a real imax screen is not enough resolution.. but since it's not pixels... it's chemical grain...

Then again all these IMAX screens at regular theaters are a bunch of baloney.. ahem.. bologna... I wonder what res bologna though... 2K slices?

film for major motion pictures is far from dead.

come back in 2-3 years and we'll see about that. most films out in theatres right now you wouldn't even know it but are all shot in digital already.

recent ones, Predators, 2012, Zombieland, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Alice in Wonderland, Avatar, Balls of Fury, I can go on and on. a good percentage of current films are all shot on digital you would just never even know it without actually looking into it. i expect in a couple more years it'll be 50/50 or 75/25 in digital's favor

Just don't see why film should/would be dead - on a major hollywood financed picture the cost of film is negligible. From a workflow standpoint, sure all digital is nice, but given the choice and budget I'd shoot on film over digital in a heartbeat assuming the project was right for it...can't we all just get along? :) Digital projection/distribution may be one thing, but if you shoot it on film it will still look like film when it's digitally projected, and if you don't shoot it on film, it will never, ever quite look like film (maybe very close) no matter what you do to it in post.

yeah i'm not saying that digital is better than film. I'm just saying how it is, that more and more films are digital. and my opinion that regular film WILL be phased out soon. after all it's pretty much done and phased out in PHOTOGRAPHY so why is it such a big surprise that in cinema it would be gone soon after as well? to my knowledge no photographer shoots on film anymore, it's all about the dslr now
