GH13 or EX1 from helicopter?

What's the opinion on this board? I've got to shoot a ship from a helicopter at about 1000ft and was wondering whether it's worth renting an EX1 for this kind of shot?

The rest of the shoot is on GH13s and the footage is looking sensational. It's all on Zeiss primes, but I've got access to the stabilised 14-140 kit lens for the heli shoot if I need it.

Unfortunately these shots will be hand-held from the heli - there's definitely no budget for a gyro.

Handheld and no gyro? Has to be the EX1 and even that concerns me.

Do you know which helicopter you'll be shooting from?

Yeah, concerns me too, but there's definitely no budget for a gyro rig ($10-12,000 per shoot). The brother of the owner of the company I'm shooting for has a chopper, so the chopper is 'free'. I think he has two different ones, but I'll have to find out what kind. Tripod tied down in the chopper? Any other ideas?

The problem with shooting from a heli, is not just the movement, it's the vibration. Noel makes a good point when he asked what kind of heli your gonna be in, because it makes a difference. To be honest, I would bring both. The gh13, is small enough to throw on a neck strp if need be. This way you can shoot with both, and use what evers better. Also, if you access to a small stabablizer, like the hague, for you gh13, you may be able to finesse it enough to get a smooth shot. The merlin is probably too big. but there's a few smaller stabalizers out there for dslrs. may be worth a try.

That's good advice... a friend of mine shot handheld recently from a heli with an EX1 and he was quite happy with the result (and so were the client) but I suppose it's all a question of expectations!
