GH13 Feature film grabs (Anamorphic, 40Mbps)

Hi there. little update! Just wanted to say that we are finally done principal photograpy! Feels good! We are more than half way through the rough cut and have lots of things on the go; website, posters, 2.5min trailer, etc. Going to try to start a User Films thread soon too.

Hi Ryan - glad to see more. As ever, really digging the look (but you know I already like it :)

The window & lights around it seem oddly familiar... and the talent is smiling... hopefully these stills are from the start of the movie (when the characters meet up for the first time) & not from the end - otherwise my expectations for a sad/melancholic movie will be dashed if it has a happy ending! LOL

Look forward to updates as they come.

Haha, won't say which part these are from.. But, I'd say the film has neither a happy hollywood ending nor an F you! everyone's sad/dead indie ending.
So fear not! And thanks for keeping up with the film!
 
Hey I saw where you said you hope to at least get a good 720P master - did you experience any quality loss when it came to using the GH13? I use the T2i and while I won't say I know exactly what's going on (cuz I have no real clue), I feel as though my files only look realistic when downsized approx half the total resolution. With the Panasonics, does the resolution tend to produce realistic results closer to the original rez size? To me, this is important because of ratio cropping, having a tiny bit of room to do better framing in post, festival and theater distribution, ect ect. Hopefully the GH's improve that.
 
Hmm are you talking about the "2x is too narrow thread"? I think I said if we finish at a 2.4:1 aspect we'll go 1296x540... but that's just by default because once I squeeze the image down to correct for the 2x anamorphic lens it'll only be 540px high, then I need to crop the side off to take the aspect from 3.56:1 (1920x540) to 2.4:1 leaving me with the 1296x540 frame. So I'm not down-rezzing on purpose... I think we'll finish with a 2.67:1 aspect (1440x540) though, purely for the aesthetic. From what I've seen the GH13 & GH2 look great finishing at 1920x1080 though. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions.

It's all about the writing. I hope this film is written as beautifully as it looks. I've seen a lifetime of eye candy. Stir my soul with words and ideas too! It is absolutely stunningly drop dead gorgeous footage though. Good luck to you when you give birth to this.

Thanks Geno. I do think the film is based around very strong ideas as well as images. The story comes mostly through the characters actions/inactions and dialogue doesn't play that big of a role in the film. It won't be to everyone's taste, some people may be bored, but others will relate to it and that's great.

I was wondering how you compare this to canon t2i for a film look or even the 5d?
Are these mounts that mount to the front and squeeze the image?
35mm is your widest? What is that equivalent to in non anamorphic gh1 terms?
Does this mean you used a 35mm prime along with this 35mm front anamorphic squeezer?
What is the point of using anamorphics is it just to get more resolution ? I mean you can just crop your 16:9 gh1 image to 2:35 if you wanted.

Can you show me link where you got these from and some more info where i can learn

Not long at all; we're improvising a lot of the dialogue on set and shooting from the outline, breakdowns and a rough shot list. The goal is an 80 or so minute film.

Film 'look' isn't just about the camera - it's about composition and lighting... and style. GH1's have produced great stuff in skilled hands - have you seen this short? http://vimeo.com/15059034 shot on an unhacked GH1 using PL (cine lenses) and a talented crew.

The lenses used are 'one piece' lenses - the Squarefront lens stretches the image with a X2 ratio, so yes, they squeeze the image.

A 35mm anamorphic lens is 35mm in it's vertical FOV but is 17.5mm in it's horizontal FOV - it's wider horizontally (as the front lens is not spherical).

The 35mm Squarefront lens is a 35mm lens. It has two parts, the front Squarefront anamorphic section and the back lens (which is a standard 35mm). The type of Lomo lens used by Ryan is all in one piece (it is not a lens adapter type), but a cine lens designed for old style film production.

Anamorphic lens have a certain 'look' - they also have a unique bokeh effect that is ovular (rather than round) - they flare easily and also produce true anamorphic horizontal flares and streaks. You can fake the flares and streaks in post packages, but the bokeh is more difficult. It is a style choice to shoot this way. Some Hollywood directors shoot anamorphic and others don't. If you shoot 16X9 and crop, you're not getting the exact framing you'd get on an anamorphic lens (as the vertical & horizontal FOV are different).

You need to do some more searching in this forum and others - just google anamorphic or Lomo lenses - that will be a start. These lenses are no longer made - they are antique, so getting hold of them is difficult. Last year a 35mm Squarefront average price was $1500 - now you can expect to pay $2500 or more, so a shooting kit is no longer cheap.

MadMonk, we are still just grinding our way through post production. And all the work is happening in our free time only, so it's taking us a while, but we'll get it finished, the goal is that the film is ready by the new year.

thanks for your replies guys. i asked about the camera and film look because ive had my eye on the cheapest dslr that does video which is the nikon d5000, but every single video i have seen looks like video, in contrast every single canon 7d ive seen looks like film. Madmonk, thanks for that vimeo film link, i have not seen it before and it looks very good as far as film look is concerned. Ive decided the gh1 is my camera of choice.

Just wanted to update those who may still be interested in our little film..
The Hills Green edit is now PICTURE LOCKED!

The film is now with our sound editor and work on the score has begun as well.
I'll be working on the grade, grain, some stabilizing, etc.
Krista has been working on our festival plan.

@ryancglover Try and get a screening in L.A. - I really want to see your film. :)

When you announced it back in 2010, it showed some of the greatest dramatic and stylistic potential of any full-length feature shot with a DSLR, camcorder, mirrorless or ENG camera. Years later as technology as continued to evolve, it is still the one I would most like to see.

I am wishing you lots of success with it.

EDIT: The trailer is great but it almost shows too much (whether it is misleading or not). I am loving the casting so far.
