GH1 vs Red One vs Canon 5D Mk II footage comparison shoot out!

Sure, here you go:

Now, will that be cash, check or money order?

Check is in the mail.

ACtually, i'd much rather shoot with a Genesis or F35. Viper cam while a nice camera, never seems to look organic to me.

hey this video is actually been featured on a different website
but this article seems to be giving credit to marty meyer... whoever he is

I really, really, really, really think the lack of live monitoring of the video is the #1 compromise that we just shouldn't have to make. I mean, I was laying on top of a jail cell because that's pretty much the only place we could get to where we could actually see the GH1's display, which (looking at the display) is the only way to monitor it. It's a problem..

I would kill for live video out.

HDMI output is whatever. Composite should have been implemented.

Barry, Nighthawk, Kholi et al,

It sounds like you all really want an SD/composite output from the camera. About 3-months ago I spent an afternoon and pretty much solved the problem by customizing a bit of old school (cough, cough... film) technology. I designed an eyepiece video tap, adapted to the GH1; I even made plans for a properly lightweight power supply, not 1x but 2x 601 outputs yadda, yadda.

Priced the whole thing out and it was going to cost a chunk of change. Production didn't want to pay for it, so we went with the really cheap (free) SD output "rig", this involved a Canon HV20. Thing looks ugly but effective for the jib shots none the less.

I've held off on making the video tap a reality, because if I was to bet on one thing being updated in firmware it would be a live output, and then the video tap project would be a total waste of time for me. I have no knowledge if enabling live video is even possible in the GH1; it just seems more likely than any other update to me.

If there's enough interest I'll actually build the prototype I worked out, in a proper machined housing and take some pictures of the part and the live images. THEN, If there's enough interest in the prototype, I can build a small run of video taps.

Even if I got enough people to buy one, and I did the work at a break even (or near enough break even) operation, to cover my machine time and prototype expenses, the investment on a video tap would still work out to be several hundred $ per unit.

So let's say I do all that and make a small and elegant GH1 video tap- how much would you actually be willing to spend on an accessory that solves the SD output problem??

I know Nighthawk says he will kill, but will he spend?

For a few hundred $, oh brother, I'd spend. Keep us updated but do you really believe a firmware update is possible?
A good deal of some car mount footage was wasted because initial framing wasn't maintained properly by car's driver. Didn't know that till we reviewed the footage. Camera placement was awkward and wouldn't allow access to LCD. Any video out would have helped save time and, yes, gas. '65 Thunderbird and at today's gas prices I would have saved half of what your video tap would cost let alone crew time.

OOOH I like that , "Let the pencils cost next to nothing so everyone can have one and then let's see who can actually draw" Really really good. This statement says it all. Unfortunately its this exact thing that makes it difficult for people like me to run a lucrative business. If Uncle Joe can do it for free with his GH1, and the quality is hmm OK, then why hire a professional. I had this happen to me, even after the client told me that my rates are quite reasonable considering the market I'm in (Montreal), they decided that one of the company employee's would bring in his little HD Sony or Canon or whatever brand was cheapest and shoot it, even though this was an important speaker and the company makes millions, hmm, guess that's why they make millions. So in part I agree with the pencil thing, but it does make it harder to make a living at this, I personally know a few guys who have given up because of the ever changing digital revolution.

Yeah, my plan to overcome it was to slide an HV20 or comparable into the shoe on the camera. But while there are always ways around the problem, it remains something that is a fundamental shortcoming in the unit that the factory would have to address before they could consider any form of broadcast/professional version of the HV20.

I tried something similar with a couple of different cameras which is almost acceptable but it's those awkward situations like you on the jail and me in the car where it just isn't possible. I'm at the point I'm accepting the LCD for the straightforward shots. I haven't had too many disappointments but truly interesting shots that take time to set up, video out would be a huge time saver. There was a product much like Illya described but it wasn't configured for the GH1. I'd go for Illya's product, at the price he mentioned, in a heartbeat but I kinda need it yesterday.

i would easily spend 300 on this.

$300 is a lot....but if the quality was there I'd totally consider it. While I personally don't know if I'd spend that much I know a ton of people would and I am sure there is at least as much a market for this as there is for the PL mount, etc.

The one thing I might ask of Illya is if in the configuring of the tap could it be manufactured in such a way that it would be considered 'universal' so as we could adapt it to the next generation of cam or a different cam just so it's not specific to GH1 alone. That way we can keep it in our respective 'kits' as technology progresses. Hope this a feasible idea.

I think this is a great idea. I'll definitely keep this in mind as I push forward.

super 8

super 8

impressive....the only place I see a true difference is during the daylight shots....during night shots..very hard to tell the difference

Hey super 8 is that really a picture of a super 8? looks like a Canon Scoopic 16 I used to have.

Seeing as how I just won an Ikan monitor and a fair amount of cash (500-1000...depending on how nice my co-producer is, who also had a film that won first prize @ $2000 so we'll see...) I am now very interested in the video tap. Yes I would buy.

EDIT:
Uh oh they just took the winners down from the website...maybe they're just tweaking some things :)
