Gh1 video: exposure problems with zoom

There is a serious flaw with the supposed "full manual" mode for GH1 video (Creative Movie Mode).

Namely, the exposure still auto-compensates when the lens is zoomed. Astonishing because even as the aperture, frame-rate, and iso numbers hold steady, the exposure "steps" are clearly visible (and audible).

You can see the issue in this 14sec clip -- I didn't shoot it, but it's the only other acknowledgment I've seen of this problem:

I'm shocked that more people are not reporting on this issue. Aren't other people bothered by this?

I don't know the German language....is that what it is in the description?....what i could make out looked like the word "Intelligent", which suggests that the shooter was in iA, or Intelligent Auto Mode, and NOT Manual. Even in Full manual mode, as you zoom with the kit lense, it will close the aperture accordingly....it's not a "zoom-through" constant aperature lense.

Believe me, these days, if this was a defect, EVERYONE here would make sure that it made it on the news.

i should also add, without a hint of sarcasm, that zooming in and/or out during a shot, especially at the rate of speed as the video you referenced is a rare and understandably underused technique, and may not even be worth noting that said exposure changes, while they may be unusual and unpleasant to your eye, can be generally avoided with the use of better camera positioning and techniques and not a defect of the camera itself.

that was the longest sentence i have ever written.

The posted video is for demo of the effect -- the settings they used are not relevant, because the issue occurs regardless of settings.

"Zoom through" or not, the compensated stepping is the problem.

We all know the "no need to zoom" lesson. That us not the point here. Point is the camera should not compensate for exposure in a mode that is supposed to be fully manual.

Well then, all i can say is that I haven't experienced this problem, and based on this one video, you're wondering why this "defect" hasn't raised a few more eyebrows. Has it? Not here. Not sure why, but the greater majority of the GH1 users here don't zoom in and out all willy-nilly, so it's not likely anyone else here would see it as a defect. I'm sorry, but i don't think that this exposure-stepping phenomenon is going to be an issue for most people here. I do NOT mean to come off as rude.

Wanna know what the effect is like? USE the camera, and try what that video poster tried...

but my original point was that most users HERE (without pretense, honestly) do not zoom in or out like that during a shoot. So a defect to your eye may not occur to a user that shoots static or very slow-moving shots, that's all.

It may truely be an issue with the camera. Based on that video, it just might be, but if it's an issue for you, then look towards another camera.

Thank you for the links, Marty. I searched but obviously not well enough. F on my homework.

So given the last posting from those ("Try this? std. pasm modes, lock ae button, zoom, no clicking!!! switch to cmm clicking/stepping noise again, interupts bumps video exposure!! f/w issue fix!") -- I take it by that last part that short of a firmware fix this is just the way it is, am I understanding correctly?

For the record, when I test in standard PASM modes the clicking goes away and the stepping is massively diminished, but some flicker still persists.

Wasn't this fixed in a recent firmware update? I know it used to trouble me but now it doesn't seem to happen.
