GH1 Strap rivet broken

If it is not shaking it got stuck to a magnet inside the camera.
There is little danger that it will dislodge and short some circuit.
So just find another nut of the same size and take care of the lugs.
Good luck.

sorry for my english, whats "dislodge" ?not even in dic. :)

Dislodge in this case means getting loose.
The Russian technicians are quite capable and I am sure the can help you.
Bring the disassembly pictures with you to speed up the process.
Or at least keep the URL handy so thet can look it up on their computer.
Once they see what is involved they will fix it in no time.
Perhaps they will even manage to fish out the stuck nut.

Good luck.

no I won't! sold my GH1 and got a 7D :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
I thought about taking the same route but after comparing with my cousin's 7D, I decided against it because for me GH1's advantages far outweigh its issues.

Just had a second GH1 rivet come apart. This is horribly annoying for such an expensive camera.

To the person above who asked, my turnaround time on another GH1 with US Panasonic support was three weeks.

The LH strap lug is in the wrong place. It should be moved forward or even better, make it a slot. The "D" rings act like little torque bars and tend to stress the lug more than a simple round ring might.

The fix is pretty simple and involves only a few screws. You will need a proper sized screwdriver to avoid stripping the small screws. I used a #0 phillips 2.2mm. You will also need a 4.5mm nutdriver if you have an older model. Use red loctite on the screws. Mine was an older model and had the nuts instead of screws. It was evident that loctite was applied originally but the nut still came loose. If you are careful and use red loctite your warranty will not be invalidated because there are no seals to break to open it up.

Here's a service manual that will guide you. It is well illustrated and costs about 8 bucks.

The repair takes about 20 minutes. I repaired both my lugs although the RH lug was still tight. I don't use the neckstrap lugs anymore at all.

BTW, I did contact Panny and they said it was covered by warranty and the woman gave me a prepaid return label so if you want them to fix it, it should not be a problem. However, the repair estimate was 2 to 4 weeks and I couldn't afford the time as I am in the middle of a production schedule.

Hope this will help someone.

True, but I couldn't have a camera at this price range where the strap rivet is going to snap every few months. It just wasn't an option for me.

Also, I need 24p and 60p, but the GH1 in Europe only has 25p and 50 which makes creating 24p footage very tricky. People have suggested buying a US or Japan model, but then where would that leave me with the warranty?! I'd never have managed to get a replacement cam for the faulty one in the first place.

Also, the 7D's image seems to hold up more where the GH1 would break apart.

Nothing is perfect but I'm still waiting for the day a vDSLR can do 2k 60fps as a minimum, or at the very least full 1080 60p.

The main thing is that, in original asasembly of that rivet, its screwed and "glued" , means that screw is not enough?

whatever,
now the repairman will do the same, means it may be broken again in the future?!:banned:

Or he must do it better, maybe just better glue material? because the screwy part on the Strap is very little ( 2mm!)
lool, so, maybe new strap?

any ideas for that?? :Drogar-BlackEye(DBG

I hate Panasonic.

The rivet opened again, both sides, 4 months after a 120$ fix.

Now I have to do it again.

So, 240$ fix for a new camera, that I bought in November. and who can promise me that this is the end of it...
Or, I have to choose, to give my camera for 1-2 months to the Panasonic service...

I would never recommend to buy GH1 to anyone, I am really pissed about this issue.

Just don't use the rivet. Me and many other people here don't use it. If you need to have a strap, I'd look at getting a black rapid strap that connects to the bottom screw on camera.

I have one like this , arca swiss plate that have strap holders.

But I can't replace the battery without removing it, and its not comfortable like the original rivet straps. (camera is falling opposite)

I posted a little while back, but I made my own black rapid strap and I find it's better than before. The camera can swivel 360 degrees without getting tangled up.

That's why I never sent it to Panasonic. Fixed it myself with the help of the pictures posted on this thread. Took me about 30 mins and so far everything seems to be rock solid.

Just took delivery on a new GH1 directly from Panasonic. Is it normal that the strap lugs have a tiny amount of play in them? They do turn just slightly. I would have thought Panny had fixed their loose lug nut problem by now with the GH2 on the horizon.

@Monkeyking:

I thought the same thing with my 1 week old GH1 so I cracked it open to investigate using one of the several GH1 "strap fixit tutorials". I found that the lugs had been upgraded to the "new Lugs" essentially a male female reversal. I put several footpounds of torque on those screws and could not get them to budge. The play that you experience is the not so tight tolerance of the "keyed" lug. In my estimation the play will allow for a bit more flexibility when you have the camera dangling. (Thats what I tell myself anyway!)

I will continue however to treat the GH1 strap quite differently then say my old Nikon F3!

Thanks Jay! I'm putting on the strap right now, but I may have to get another strap as I had a bad experience with the Panny strap on a GF1 - camera slid right off my shoulder onto the ground while I was standing still . The strap can only grip onto your shirt on one side; the other side is smooth and bad news.

I always ditch the stock camera straps. I use neoprene aftermarket jobbies that have a bit of rubber band affect. Very comfortable.
