GH1 Strap rivet broken

Sounds like a manufacturing (design) defect if it happened during normal use, probably fixable under warranty.

Yup, sucks. If Panasonic don't offer a quick solution, I'll get a solid third party solution. Such an expensive device needs to be secure or it could be an expensive accident...

geez that's no good. any side in particular? do you guys also find it annoying that the left one always hits the lcd screen when you open and rotate?

YESSSSSSS!!!!...really drives me insane. But thank you, thats just got me thinking... perhaps a good reason to get a simple wrist strap instead. Considering it came off the left side (where the LCD is), maybe that is a good idea. Coming to think of it, the shoulder strap is pretty useless. Only thing is, I'll have to close the hole from the rivet.

How about this?

Any other options?

I'd like to see some sort of outer shell accessory to protect it from dings and scratches along with a strap mechanism. It seems like the strap swivel would be under warranty though. Anybody turned theirs in after this happened? The looks of it seems pretty sturdy. Any photographs of exactly where this is happening on the camera and how it has become detached?

Well I was holding it, and just saw this so definitely a production flaw. The fact that this has happened a few times means that its just a weak build area on the camera. Might not happen to every camera, but definitely not interested in repairing and reusing.

Happy with the handstrap, fantastic not having the strap in the way of the LCD, but also interested in the Blackrapid R-strap, which only uses the tripod socket.

Interesting. Does it look like it was attached by glue? Or did something actually break?

Cant see a break, but there is some screw apparatus that looks very weird. Going to glue the piece back on, just as I want to close the hole and am not interested in:

a) leaving the camera with Panasonic for weeks
b) repairing a weak system that I'm not going to test

But fortunately this has also alerted me to the blackrapid R-Strap which looks absolutely amazing. Having both the R-strap and hand strap together will be nice, easy to remove and versatile. The neck strap is in retrospect an awful mechanism, especially for our swivel LCD cameras.

Check it out...

what are the chances the other side of the rivet is floating around in the body still? may cause damage? I guess you could return it then if it does damage something.

That R strap is quite interesting. I have never used my neck strap at all other than wrapping it around my wrist. I cradle it more like a baby in my hands then throwing it around my neck. I might just piff it altogether and go for a strap.

Well it has me wondering about mine. I tend to use the strap it came with. I think I will invest in one of those r-straps or even make my own just in case. These forums are great.

Big time, as long as its practical advice and not constant consumer regret. i'm not happy at this situation, but its about what to do now that counts...

my rivet just broke as well. poor design. oh well.
i would definitely recommend investing in something like the r-strap to avoid this situation. i got lucky because i was holding the strap when the rivet broke, but if it was hanging on my shoulder, i'd probably be dealing with a broken camera.

Damn. I just checked my left rivet and it's getting loose. It's like a screw thats slowly unscrewing inside the camera waiting to let go...... My camera is one week old. What should I do?

Its seems that when it breaks the bolt inside the camera is just floating around inside the body somewhere... that can be a really bad thing...

Mine just popped out the other day, luckily I caught it. I'm in Panama and I bought the camera in the U.S. so warranty isn't really going to be worth it for something like this. Nothing seems to have broken, it just popped out. Does anyone think super-glue may be trust-worthy enough?

I used hypoxy glue just to close it, but I wont be using that strap holder. As mentioned before, I like the idea of the R-strap using the tripod socket. Oh and also , I think that a part may have broken off and be floating inside the camera... gonna hope it wont cause any issues otherwise I'll need to get it out. Regardless, not gonna waste my time sending it back to panasonic..
