Gh1 Stills Image

It does. That is reason I am asking. Me and few DP Review users observed that and contacted Panasonic support. No answer yet...

Pls have a look at below threads:

Ah! I see I didn't realize that was ever the case.

Is there a simple formula to use for the NR settings? The dpreview threads talk of NR1, NR3, etc. I assume NR1 means -2 on the menu, NR3 = 0, etc?

Thanks

Gdi, I also didn't realize it earlier... Was big and unexpected surprise!

For RAW shooters - the safest is to set NR +2, then you will get RAW as expected at all ISOs.
(pls only remember - that NR setting also may affect video)

PS: My personal experience also shows, that you can still get some banding on ISO 1600\3200 - which can be easily removed using DFINE plug-in with LR (unfortunately it is not for free...)

Thanks Jerry! I'll try that out.

so what's the verdict ? Should I be shooting RAW images or JPG ? Even though I'm a newbie I also noticed that GH1 pics do not look as sharp as the pics that I've seen from other DSLRs.

I only do RAWs. And post process in LR. That gives me better control, including much more better sharpness than JPGs, no doubts.

If I would have two use JPGs - for sure I would set SHARPNESS +2 with 14-140mm lens.

But there can't be single verdict if RAWs or JPGs ;-)
I know people, that just wants JPGs, nothing more!

I'm not at all familiar with processing RAW files so I guess Im gonna try +2 sharpness setting.

just a quick test next door at the laundromat. No tropid, shaky hands.
More to come tomorrow.

Sharpness has basically nothing to do with the camera body, except for the AA filter and the JPG processing. Since Panasonic uses the weakest AA filter on a large sensor (save for Foveons and Leicas), the GH1 can match the sharpness of any DSLR with the right glass and processing.

The key to crispness/ sharpness is keeping the final viewing size in mind, hence cranking up the sharpness to +2 doesn't help much for eg. resized online pics. More here:

I should add... I don't expect for the GH1 to look like the Canon DSLRs. I see the GH1 looking more crisp and lifelike. It's refreshingly more documentarian and modern looking. And that's a good thing to have in the toolbox.

Still rockin' the stills on my GH1, pretty much exclusively these days. I've actually become quite a big fan of the 4:3 aspect ratio as well:

What lens do you use?

What lens do you use?

A lot of the "look" in the photos is dependent on the lens. Which lens do you use on the GH1 leading you to conclude that it is not as good as Nikon or Canon? If you use the slow kit lens, 14-140, you really cannot expect much, can you, in the area of sharpness and shallow DOF? The 14-140 is optimized for the video and it is not expected to produce stills that are as good as the Nikon 17-55/2.8, which is optimized for stills and costs $1,200.

I'm really enjoying shooting stills with this camera. A few shots from last week, I was mostly filming, but switching into one of the photo modes for stills of the scene is a lot of fun and pretty seamless.
