GH1 Shipping Today! According to Panasonic Sales Rep

Dang!!! I wonder how much I could get for my black Canadian NTSC model? I'm done with my shoot in Vermont and I'm now back in Colorado. My next shoot isn't for another three weeks.

Sell mine on Ebay for $2K and hope to pick up another one before August 1st? Hmmmm. Seems a little risky.

Ah that's simple -- what would you do if August 1 comes and you have no camera, and is the risk of being put in that position worth $500?

I nearly screwed up. I tried to help rubberbandito by giving up my preorder for a second cam to him as I thought there would be no problem getting another one a little later. Timing didn't work out for his trip to Central America. My 2nd beauty is in my retailer's hands now and will be shipped tomorrow. I knew things would be tight as far as supply goes but I didn't foresee this mess.

The 2 month delay indicated on Panasonic 's US website can only mean one thing -- invasion!

My theory is that Panasonic got an earful from their big dealers, such as B&H. As of today B&H's website still says "Approx. Arrival July".

Of course, B&H's "July" estimate might not be accurate, but it's plausible Panasonic may have told B&H that they'll get some GH1 cams in July even if Panasonic's own website customers may have to wait until Sept. to make it possible. Who knows?

Personally I hope the "Sept. 9" date means that Panasonic has halted production to finalize, test, and install bug fixes & feature upgrades into newly-manufactured GH1 cams. The GH1 cams currently being delivered around the world are ones already in the distribution pipeline and will be updated later via downloaded firmware fixes. Waiting until Sept. 9 for new features & firmware sucks, but will be worth it.

Anyway, those are my theories, and silly ones at that. :-)

I do not at all hope they're fixing something because I am hoping I get my camera soon and if a GH1a (well not really a, maybe 0.5a) comes out right after or if they fix something wrong with hardware on the camera and I am stuck with a crappy one I will be pissed. I think that they just underestimated demand for a number of reasons:

The economy

The fact that they thought they were selling a high-end expensive product but didnt realized they wandered into the low end of prosumer video.

Someone just received their june 17th order today. So this means that Panasonic is receiving product even though they are telling us nothing is coming in...

So this GH1's are arriving to their US warehouse, however it's being denied! Hmmmm!

Meanwhile torture yourself more. Enjoy someone elses 1080P GH1 of the beautiful Scotland country side

Ben, I think your theory is very plausible.

Another: Panasonic's pro video division put a gun to the digital still camera division's head, telling the digi-cam people to "_increase_ the mud!", resulting in a slow-down in manufacturing while they implement the "improvements". :D

How was your VT shoot with your GH1... well enough to keep it?

Definitely. But I'm still trying to figure out the best workflow for converting the AVCHD files on my Mac.

I used it mainly as my B-camera, and for when I needed the auto focus. I wish I had my Redrock Micro rig, though (still waiting for it to be delivered). I just don't have the steadiest of hands.

I wish I could've experimented more with my two Canon FD lenses. Maybe that's what I'll do over the next three weeks? That, plus editing the Vermont footage.

It's not you, man. I honestly thought my hands were shakey but now that more people have VDSLRS I see that EVERYONE's hands are shakey.

You need weight on the camera or a steadicam setup. There's no way around it aside from using 14mm - 24mm lenses all the time.

In my opinion, this screws things up for everyone else and is generally just compulsive behavior and childishness.... .

Ordering from multiple places to try and get the camera asap is childish? Wow, okay....

Panasonic screwed this all up, not us. Can't blame us for trying to get the camera a little sooner and creating our own backups.

If it's 1080, why does the video display as 720? Downsampled?

Looks like I was charged an extra $50 by Henry's on top of the $1696 for the GH1 - so I'm assuming they charged me for bringing it into the US...

Hope it arrives today or tomorrow...

Your CC company may have charged for the currency conversion, as well.

This does not look good. Vanns used to have GH1 for preorder, I just checked and it's showing out of stock and no way to preorder. This just probably means even the retailers won't have them until Sept. I'm guessing either Panasonic is producing very little inventory for US or they're giving boat loads of cameras to Asia market. This just shows you how they hate US.

Sure. I guess if you're in a rush and have someone who will only hire you if you have a this camera. Further, Panasonic didn't screw up. Panasonic Direct sold this camera first, netting a resale profit directly back into the company. Keeping stock levels low is a traditional safety net for non essential goods during recession, and also helps retain initial list price for a longer duration. If there weren't a current downturn in the market, buyers would tend to purchase up and go for a Canon to spite the Panny stock leveling "mistake". Panasonic is in a perfect position on this. They ain't filmmakers, they bidness men. I been a buyer a seller and a user for a long time and this has been done before by Nikon, Sony, Canon, etc....

Ohh they so F-ed up it's beyond laughable. The joke is those idiots make more money on each sale when we buy it direct with them apposed to a dealer. The dealer pays cost to Panndiots; where as we pay MSRP to Panndiots. They make more money off us; and they still can't get their sh*t in order. The rest of the world is getting deliveries; we are getting excuses.....
