GH13 GH1 seems shakey

I recently got a GH1 and I'm using a Canon FD 50mm 1.4 with it. The footage seems very shaky when I'm hand holding it. I realize there's no OIS but it just seems kinda jittery. I tried filming with a shutterspeed of 30 and 60... is there anything I need to be aware of? Do people really use this as a run & gun handheld camera without OIS? Maybe I just have early onset parkinson's... but my EX1 looks better even with OIS turned off.

Microjitter - the plague of DSLRS :)

Basically, large sensor & lightweight body - plus handholding etc all translates into jittery footage. Hence the need for so many different rigging solutions for DSLRS when used in video mode.

Your EX1 sensor is smaller and, despite the body and ergonomics of the camera not being typical ENG style, the weight/mass helps (even without OIS).

If you have a rig for your EX1 or some type of shoulder stabiliser (etc) try the GH1 on that, this should remove a lot of the jitter - plus a wider lens would help too (giving the sensor more to see). Or try shooting footage with the camera viewfinder up against your eye (like a normal stills camera) - this will help.

MadMonkFish: Thanks, I suspected it had something to do with the things you mentioned. Especially since my 50mm lens is basically being doubled to a 100mm lens with the GH1's sensor size... I wonder if I can get it to balance on my Merlin...

It has to do with the ergonomics and basic physics. The closer your hands are to the centre of gravity, the easier it is for slight hand movements to transfer to camera shake. Because the cameras are so small and also have a more vertical design than camcorders, it is almost impossible to move your hands away from the centre of gravity.

This is one reason why a rig can be so helpful - it's not just the fact that you can rest the camera on your shoulder, it's because it makes the whole rig longer, allowing you to place your hands in further from the centre of gravity, in a position where hand movements translate to camera shake at a much lower ratio.
