GH1 sample footy and pricing

Unfortunately, the GH-1 is crippled. It is a real shame, since it seems so dead on in other aspects.

Panasonic has a problem with p24, especially 1080p24. It appears they are reading the sensor too slowly. I talked to another manufacturer and they shoot 24 at 48 and throw away the alternate frames.

The Rebel lacks all the cool manual features...and you need to get a lens so the price is about the same. It only shoots 720p24 for practical purposes and then skipping 2 of 3 rows. However, is doing that on a APS-C sensor and with 5.3µm pixel spacing (vs. the GH-1's 4.4µm, the GH-1 has more photo sensor area). The enabling feature is 720p30@25Mb/s. That is 13.3:1 compression vs. 38:1 on the GH-1 (44.5:1 in 1080p24).

Do you have one in your possesion? I guess you might be in the Panasonic list of early testers. The movers and shakers of the video and photography business. The top of the line videographers and photographers on the A list of companies for testing. Leaders of the industry! That is so cool.

Granted the canon's have less compression but 30fps and no manual shutter rules them out for filmmaking. I suspect Nikon has a better option around the corner.

everything about making an indie film is crippling, the question is, is it too crippled? On paper it looks useable. There's some good films that were shot on the DVX (the road to gitmo, 28 days later), do you guys think it could look better than the DVX or not?

If the GH1 didn't exist I'd just shoot it on the D90, others have and it would look better than anything shot on video soft as it is.

No disrespect to you DavidNJ ...but you are depressing. You have lots of technical know how...but without any proof in the pudding...reading your statements about something we all don't know about first hand...is rather ..well...depressing. I like the Web samples Panasonic showed us so far...and I'm sure the actual files looks even better. Let's just wait till the cam finally gets released...then we can talk more than just theories.

Sorry to come off so strong....but because I'm on the market for a new cam like some others..I really am looking for some good solid info instead of conjecture.

The Canon Rebel is only going to be about $900 with lens. So it shooting 720p30 isn't really that bad. Is it the same compression as the 1080p30 5dmarkII at 720p30? If so that would be very nice. If this GH1 is under $1200 everyone will have one. Simply because it is also a good SL(R)

28days was xl1-2 wasn't it? either way, David, you're making a HUGE assumption based of....well nothing. Where's LizaWitz to boost everyones enthusiasm for the Gh1 when David is bringing it down. Seriously, man, you work for Canon? You're as bad as John's hate for the D90 video.

I'm pretty sure it was the DVX but same difference

hehe well I like to know stuff so David's compression ratio's are interesting and yeah a bit depressing when you think about what is done to your amazing shots....but specs are one thing....we've all seen really nice footage shot with cheap highly compressed camera's. at the moment the GH1 looks to be the best of them and from memory panasonic aren't known for making shi*.

Now I'm off the the hardware store to buy some crippled worklights.

It was a Canon.

And Canon is not giving enough up in their VDSLR line-up. You may pay 900.00 for 720/30P, but you pay 900.00 for 720/30P. That means you need to work around it, including no manual controls!

In that case, I'd honestly rather roll with a GH-1. How many more headaches do you need when you don't have any money to begin with?

yeah ur right pal xl1s.

I didn't sit there watching it thinking errr video.....errr lo fi......err artifacts. Actually the story was good enough (not the best script but entertaining enough to watch) that I didn't even notice it wasn't film (I've only seen it on DVD)

They really are VDSLRS when you first see them you think "Ooh I like that, I want to play with that" Then the next day you go to the toilet and it's nothing but excruciating pain.

You're as bad as John's hate for the D90 video.

At least I tried it and got to my own conclusion that I did not liked it, but passing judgement on a camera without no direct experience with it is pretty weird to say the least.

It just looks like video

It just looks like video

I first got really excited about the GH1 especially as it has all the elements I need to shot run and run one man documantaries in stealth mode! But the samples look like nice video to me, or at best hdv with a good adapter. Now of course 12months ago I would of pee'd my pants over that, but just technical issues aside the D90 has a much more filmic quality. I can look at the D90 footage and convince myself its film, which as hard as I try I just see video from the GH1.

I know its early days and I hope I am wrong, but samples do give an early flavour to the look of the GH1 output. Please God put the GH1 functions in a new Nikon PLEASEEEEE.

I especially think for those shooting fictional work the D90 with all its problems would make people think you shot on film the most. Anyone agree?

No. D90 is a great stills camera. There, I said it again. Video mode, nope. You can tell almost nothing from the stuff shown from the GH1 so far. There is no way you can tell if it looks like film, video, or manga for that matter. We have to wait and see at non-compressed stuff to look for the flaws and "video-look" assesments. Its too early to tell.

20p.... enuf said

The Rebel's 720p30 straight or converted to 24p will look better than the GH-1's 1080p24. There is no getting around one being compressed 3.5x more. That extra compression loses anything the sensor may have seen in addition and then some.

My guess is we will see the 50D Mark II soon, NAB maybe, and it will ship with 1080p30, the same good compression of the 5D Mark II, some manual control, and a price point within a few hundred of the GH-1. That said, the GH-1 should be better, if it wasn't for the compression.
