GH1 sample footy and pricing

If those hammered Flash videos do it for you, you may want to consider raising your standards.

The Rebel ships in may, 720p30 at my guess is 25Mb/s AVC (less than half the GH-1 compression) with a admittedly weird (4500x1080?) sensor. However, the photo sites are 5.2µm vs 4.4µm and we know Canon can make a sensor. Expect a 50D Mark II around that time also. That will do 1080p30 I believe. Same sensor, but the 45Mb/s data rate (similar compression ratio).

Now I'm not saying the GH-1 is bad, and if that HDMI port is live I would expect it to be able to blow the others away. But it is not a given. In standard mode, I would expect the $900 Rebel to take better pictures (720p30@25Mb/s vs 1080p24@13.7Mb/s).

Are those clips really better than these that we've had for a while? http://www.panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh1/movie.html

What did it for me was the shallow depth of field that we didn't see in the previous clips. I figure they used the 25mm f/1.4 lens this time around. Clearly the flash vids give no indication of resolution but considering camera's like the HMC150 have the same codec and bitrate (HMC does up to 21Mbps) I think the output should look pretty decent.....unless they've done something to cripple it which I doubt.

Where are you getting 13.7Mbps from? The specs say 17Mbps.

The rebel might be ok for videographers but for cinematographers it's completely useless.

i want to see a sample without ridiculous digital sharpening. looks like they turned it up in camera and then added even more in post. i guess it's what sells cameras, but it looks like shi*.

you're such a softie matt

Nobody wants 30P, dude. The only reason people are DEALING with it is becuse the MKii looks really nice.

Course we should see some uncompressed footage, but it's a pretty decent outlook at this point.

I'm no "Pro" but I'm not convinced at all about the quality and the "look" of the GH1 movie mode. I think that you guys are in for an unpleasant surprise went it comes out. Why do I see all those strange artifacts in such small movie clips. You guys blame the web compression but how compressed could these small clips be? Also, there isn't one clip that has a film-look to it. The first D90 movie clips were much more impressive and its artifacts problem was only apparent to ME when I finally saw clips at a higher resolution. Could Nikon have made such a better job at compressing their movies for the web?

Just my amateurish 2cents...

There isn't much to notice at this point. You can't really make a final judgement with the compression on these clips. All we can say is that it looks promising, that's all. We will soon know for sure.

I don't notice it. Where's it at? Please point it out cause I don't see any vignetting.

And, yeah, it is web compression. It's pretty obvious.

Very compressed. The 5DII had little marketing clips about the same resolution as these GH1 clips. Best to withhold major judgments for full size raw footage.

The first D90 movie clips were much more impressive
because they were shot by a photographer/cinematographer and not a video producer for cheesy industrials. i've edited a fair share of those and they always look exactly the same.

That's also not the first video.

You do know that real cameras work a bit differently from the 35mm Adapters, right? As in, the vignetting might be because they're out in broad daylight and a crappy lens is stopped down beyond 5.6... resulting in image diffraction and other anomalies that are quite normal but DVXusers have deemed "unpleasant" because they don't shot often enough to know better?

definitely possible, but they don't tel us, so i just have to assume thats a problem with the image. lol, and yes, i have worked with "real camreas" for years now.

Kay. I mean, generally you wouldn't assume it's a problem with a flat sensor... but a discrepancy of lens choice and employment. Hell, it might be a filter on the front of the lens creating the slightly darkened edges.

The Rebel is inexpensive, and its 720p30 images will probably blow away any camera near its price, especially if you put better glass on it..

1080p24 over 60i is 13.7, as shown in this picture posted by Steve Mullen of his PMA clips. I have little hopes for its on camera recording. The Canon's 720p30 should dust it. The 50D Mark II should really dust it with 1080p30. Then there is the 5D Mark IIa. The GH-1 reminds me of a trial photo editing software package that won't let you save the file.
