GH1 sample footy and pricing

the widest glass I have for the D90 is an 18mm sigma so 27mm @1.5x crop on the D90. It looks like shi* wide open @ f/2.8 though. The olympus 14-35mm wide open @ f/2 and sharp would be around the same focal length 28mm @ 2x crop. As far as I know there isn't any other lens as fast at that focal length.

Tokina 11-16mm man. It's ridiculous.

I like em wide too....glass not girls. Ultimately I'd like a D800 full frame with a Nikon 14mm f/2.8 and a bevy of supermodels but the GH1 and my GF will do for now.

I have a nikkor 28mm f/2.8 and a 28mm f/2. there's a big difference in low light perf and DOF so the Olympus f/2 is a must have if I get the GH1. And we're yet to see if the GH1 does as well in low light as the D90, probably not quite.

remember you don't have to be subject to "nikon" glass. find some other glass, get an adapter and you're golden. i'm looking at some canon fd, see if there's anything out there. i'm not really concerned with how fast the glass as long as it's 2.8, is cause i dont want dof with wides. i've never seen anything wide with shallow dof.

with a better codec and adjustable iso, you're probably gonna see it outdo the d90 in lowlight. not to point out that the chip is huge so it's lowlight is going to be up to par. but nothing near the mk2.

i'm soooooo looking forward to manual shutter and ISO........and no self destruct countdown....and a working viewfinder......and no pasty faces.

I'll have to import one from the US or Japan because the local model is 25p

Well I haven't actually scrolled through the menu's (a trip to Japan and breaking and entering into the panasonic factory wasn't costed into my film budget) but all the documentation I've seen clearly states that all of the stills functions are available in movie mode.

You gotta love this translation

"" You can enjoy shooting the sh#t as well as high-quality video, GH1 has a well advanced movie recording capabilities to meet the taste of the photographer."".
There is even more sh#t you can adjust... I quote:

You can adjust the brightness and RAIBUBYU sh#t.

:D

If those hammered Flash videos do it for you, you may want to consider raising your standards.

The Rebel ships in may, 720p30 at my guess is 25Mb/s AVC (less than half the GH-1 compression) with a admittedly weird (4500x1080?) sensor. However, the photo sites are 5.2µm vs 4.4µm and we know Canon can make a sensor. Expect a 50D Mark II around that time also. That will do 1080p30 I believe. Same sensor, but the 45Mb/s data rate (similar compression ratio).

Now I'm not saying the GH-1 is bad, and if that HDMI port is live I would expect it to be able to blow the others away. But it is not a given. In standard mode, I would expect the $900 Rebel to take better pictures (720p30@25Mb/s vs 1080p24@13.7Mb/s).

Are those clips really better than these that we've had for a while? http://www.panasonic.net/avc/lumix/systemcamera/gms/gh1/movie.html

Are those clips really better than these that we've had for a while?

Yes. Bigger clips that still look decent even though it's compressed. Canon can release another DSLR, but wtihout 24fps and full manual controls they'll just further alienate filmmakers.

So PIE 09(PHOTO IMAGING EXPO 2009) was held in Tokyo today. There are some new samples

Links ripped from another site:

Here's a hand-held video someone took of the models on stage (bottom of the page), unfortunately its a shot using another camera shooting the back of the screen since they weren't allowed to bring their own media, so that quality is hard to tell, but if you want to see what non-PR impromptu handheld shot looks like. . .

Also, Olympus' m43 camera has been shown. They are going to make a production version of the 'rangefinder' mockup design they had before at Photokina, its hidden under some blue velvet but should be released this summer. . .
