GH1 or Canon T2i?

I am trying to decide whether to get a GH1 or T2i to complement my HMC150, I already have a Nikon 50mm 1.4 Prime for whichever one I get. It is my understanding that C- Mount lenses work on the GH1 which is nice as there is always great deals on c-mount glass on eBay. I probably will be buying just a body. I don't think the kit lenses will do that great in natural indoor lighting. Plus the moving LCD is nice on the GH1. This camera will be used as a second camera during interviews and for B-Roll

Why do you like your camera?

I've read about the many advantages and disadvantages of DSLRs I just am having a tough time deciding between the two

Any advice is appreciated

Hey,
I practically put up a thread almost the same a couple days ago....I believe on the Canon side. Welcome to the Dark Side! lol jus kidding.
It is a hard decision to make but since I have the HMC40 and dont want to put a DOF adapter on it I believe I will be buying the T2i for my needs.

Id say too try them both out if you can... That is the best way to be sure. Find somone in the area and then see what suits your purposes...

Both have strengths over one another.. and of course limits. I've shot quite a few 150/7d combo shoots and its pretty acceptable but as Barry points out all the time, theres so many quirks too shooting with a DSLR. The overheating thing was a major bummer.

The legit question is GH1 or 5D mk II. If you're already asking between the GH1 and the T2i the choice has already been made. GH1.

Because the 5D mk II gets the best image of all the Canons. It has the best FOV with wide glass and great low light performance. All of the Canons are pretty much exactly the same except for IQ. They all have the same strengths and weaknesses....but the 5D gets the best image. It also has a large sensor and no AGC.

The GH1 is a very different camera than the Canons, it has different strengths and weaknesses. When comparing those AND image quality, there is an argument to be made between the two. I personally find the GH1 to be the superior camera.

If you want the best camera might as well compare the two best in each category. If the GH1 beats the 5D, which many here would argue, then of course it beats the T2i.

Every feature edge the 5D has over the GH1 (no auto gain control, larger sensor) the T2i doesn't have, and every feature edge the GH1 has over the 5D (no recording time limit, more glass available, autofocus, flip out LCD, high res EVF, less aliasing and moiré) it also has over the T2i.

Well put Ben-

Plus guys, this topic has been covered a BUNCH....by 'Bunch' and others-do some searches

well said Ben...

I don't know how you guys haven't run into the countless other threads on this exact same topic... Its going to come down to your needs.

If you need to shoot for more then 12min, want to see your lcd at any angle, Auto focus, Eyepiece live preview, more lenses to choose from, etc you will want the GH1...

If you are working on a set and want the most canonish (sharp, contrasty) like image, have time for your camera to cool, want to take pictures, use only manual focus, external monitor (this one hurts) then you will want a 5D.

And T2i because it's sensor is more like Super35, which make focus pulling possible/much easier, it's got crop movie mode, which is great for sports, uses SD cards, which are cheaper than CF, outputs hi-res signal via HDMI, is lighter, cheaper and can use cheaper EF-S glass with it.

I own a 7D and find the GH1 to produce a better image to my eyes. I remember a few months back when the 7D first dropped, I said the 5D looked and got flamed big time. I'm glad i'm not the only one who feels that way.

Hi,

I don't have a dog in the fight and don't own either camera, but the from the video footage I've seen, there isn't much difference. Stills are another thing.

The GH1 looks to be a great video camera in a still camera body and so-so still camera with interchangeable lenses. That's not a bad thing, but that's the take I get from it. If video is important - and you can find your lenses in the micro 4/3ds bunch or in the slew of lenses that will convert (and you should be able to do easily), the GH1 looks pretty fine.

The DOF won't go as shallow as easily as a full frame-sized sensor unless you can get a really, really fast lens. But keep in mind that the sensor is bigger than the old "Super 16mm" which isn't all that limiting. I'm old enough to have shot in that format.

I agree Mike... you are old... hehe.. j/k!

No really, I agree about the fast glass and sensor size. The good thing is for the GH1 getting fast glass to fit is MUCH easier and cheaper to do than with the Cannons. You have so many choices to customize your image with cheap fast glass on the GH1..
That is one reason I ordered a GH1 this morning!

Now to get a rig and some primes...

What did you pay for your GH1 body?
