GH1 Newb Questions

The over the neck strap is nice when I'm using the GH1 hand held but is annoying and in the way mounted. Is there an efficient method for adding and removing the neck strap?

Is there any way to toggle MF assist while recording video?

Tamrac has a whole line of really nice straps with quick release buckles...I have a couple of them. Very nice!

be aware that the strap rivets are known to break. not sure if it has been addressed in newer models. it got in the way for me so got rid of it and just use a hand strap like a wii strap for safety and bag it or hold it in my hand when walking.

I'm just getting my feet wet, so please excuse the overt displays of newbillity.

Thanks for the pointers on straps. I'm a fool so a fail safe tether is a necessity.

Believe it or not I did read or at least skim the entire manual. I was wondering if there was a work around or hack.

Is there any way to adjust the zoom magnification or reduce the nauseating jello view with >100mm lenses?

  • For example: I was trying to shoot a candle at about 7' with an adapted FD 135mm f/2.5. I can get a half decent still through trial and error, but cant pull focus or get proper exposure in video mode.

Since I have some kind folk's attention:

I've read several threads on the audio limitations and know the popular solution in the H4n (which I can acquire wholesale), but I'd love to plug in my NTG2 and get an improvement over the on-board mics. I don't want to spend over $50 since when I cross that threshold I might as well haul along the pro audio gear I already have.

I hate the flattening effect of the GH1's flash. I would love suggestions on an alternative that's inexpensive

Background on me:

  • Pro musician/audio engineer/producer/teacher.
  • I picked up the photo/video interest last fall working on lesson video and promotional ideas.
  • I love the limits of prime lenses and intend to refine my collection of FD glass or expand to other mounts when justified

the strap i suggested is a fail safe tether =). as long as you do don't dangle your 1.5kg camera off your wrist like a point and shoot your fine. I am more fearfull of dangling the camera off my neck with a false sense of security, strap breaking and camera and lens kissing concrete. At least with the wrist strap its always in hand =)

long focal length and jello go hand in hand. everything is magnified, image, vibration, jello. get yourself a super sturdy tripod if you want to shoot nice footage at that end of the lens range.
