GH1 in run n gun scenarios

I shot a wedding with hmc150 and gh1. I was using gh1 as a 1st camera. However I found very difficult to manage rapid light changes when moving from outdoors to indoors (especially at the ceremony venue and photoshoot) and vice-versa. To keep a lens wide for narrow DOF I use screw-on plorarizers, circular and linear together. Unscrewing and screwing them on just takes way to long when you are trying to film a wedding party moving out or in a building.

Do you use matte boxes with square filters that you can remove quickly or do you just close down the lens and forget about narrow DOF?

Fader ND - filter that lets you adjust the amount of light coming in by rotating it.

Otherwise matt boxes are useful but adds a lot of equip to your setup.

I am not in wedding videography business, but from what you describe, I think mattebox with swing-away bracket would make it a bit easier.

And there is that fader ND solution which is a lot cheaper than what I suggested. :)

Does Fader ND allow to adjust it to a position where is no light loss?

No. There is always a level of ND even at the "lowest" level. If you go to the Fader ND website, I believe it tells you the level.

If you move inside, and light is low you will need to remove the Fader. It doesn't take very long to remove it...maybe 30 seconds of down time if you're prepared.

If you don't want to add tons of weight to front of your lens use a cokin P series adapter. Works like a charm when in a run and gun situation plus they sell lens shade attachments that give it a cool matte box look and the prices are cheap. super light weight!

nice! the cokin filter holder is a really good compromise between the fader and a full matte box. thanks for sharing that info! us silly video people aren't always aware of the standard still photo options available to us.

yes, but only the 'silly video people' part.
i was serious about the cokin filter holder being a great idea.

cool I am new to posting long time reader and camera guy I just don't want to offend any one right of the bat. Some times hard to get if there is sarcasim in a post or not. Thanks

silly we are! I've got one sitting on my desk that I just dig out from a drawer with my old photo gear. It's got a polarizer in it but that should be easy to substitute.
