GH1 Firmware Help

Because if the power glitches or goes out, you'll brick your camera.

Plus, I haven't tried, but I think the GH1 won't allow you to do a firmware update if you're plugged into AC. Doesn't it warn you to only use a fully-charged battery?

wild, the manual specifically states to use the AC battery. nice to know.

I suspect you haven't got enough underscores in the file name, which I believe can cause problems. Recheck that aspect, perhaps.

Thx Ozpeter
Sorry my typo... we've actually named all the files with 2 underscores.
Does text case (i.e. all caps or not) make a difference?

Thx

Paul

I read that it does, yes.

But I dunno just yet - as I haven't done an upgrade yet.

I have another question though. Since My GH1 is probably version 1.1 or 1.2 (factory installed firmware) Can't I start off the numbering of the 1.32 patch at 1.14 or 1.24 or something lower? That way if I need to install the 1.32 as 1.32 I can. Anyone know?

It's also very important to unplug the usb cable from the camera body.

If the usb cable is unplugged from the computer but still attached to the camera body, you won't get the firmware update prompt.

Took me almost two hours to figure this one out.. :violin:

I haven't installed anything yet so maybe it will be obvious while doing it but:

What does "You must install all four patches to have any effect." mean? Four? There's PTool and? What? Huh?

Explanation please.

Also I asked this previously but I think it got ignored; Can we start off our firmware revision numbering at numbers below 1.32? like say if the virgin GH1 is at 1.1 from the factory then may we use 1.12 for the 1.32+PTool upgrade?

you're not being ignored, but asking a question that' been discussed in a few different threads already. the ptool is a tool that has the patches in it. you have to have 4 of the adjustment patches selected. which in theory you only need

VBA
OBA
LBA

OK, thanks for that. So we're calling each feature that the patch tool addresses an individual patch. Gotcha!

What about the version numbering thing. I have looked but the length of some of these threads here is a bit overwhelming. All I have been able to determine is that we must iterate with each successive firmware download to the camera's BIOS.

The first time you use the tool, use 1, next time, 2, etc etc (though this looks like it's about to change... bear in mind that this tool has almost daily releases).

Tell me about it! Kudos to Tester13.

But I think I don't understand your answer. I want to START the versioning of 1.3x at 1.1x so that there's plenty of room before hitting the official revision number. I mean in case Tester's new "Version Compare" feature doesn't pan out or whatever. Afterall the camera is currently at 1.0, so a +1 would put it at 1.01 right? Or is the entire version string not user definable?

Is this possible?

Ptool works in conjunction with GH1__132.bin and not with earlier versions. There's no negative increment from there. There's a warning been posted in another thread that it could be unwise to use the beta Ptool which disables versioning, to go back to an earlier version from GH1__132. So, as I understand it, any use of Ptool means that the earliest version of the firmware you can revert to is GH1__132.

Anyone willing to do a Ptool tutorial on Vimeo? Basically something that tells you all the steps and the different video adjustments. It would be easier for people to follow along that way.

Another thing that could be useful is firmware hacks that's already done for people so all they would have to do is download it from the net and load them onto their GH1.

I kind of agree. I've been waiting for the condition to arise where all the important bits are tested stable but it's REALLY hard to figure out where we're at. There's no good step tutorials anywhere that I've seen - in test or video. The docs that accompany the DLs are for people in the know[/] ONLY and don't explain anything!

Even a feature as simple and going English on a Japanese version of the camera I have absolutely no idea how it works or what to expect from reading the docs. For example:

Does it ADD a menu option?
Does it REPLACE an existing menu option?
Will there be multiple selectable languages? And if so which ones?
Does the camera just come up in all English after the patch is installed?
Is it just allowing the camera to accept the english version of the firmware?
Etc.

I think we need a manual the documents each feature. In fact I think I'm going to start a thread and assemble one. :)

Its not hard!except for the mjpeg

Its not hard!except for the mjpeg

tables, may trip people up!

But a Tuts would be good if you have the time?

Yes I will post one to Youtube and perhaps Vimeo tonight. I will post it in 1080p as well!

I don't think posting a hacked file is a good idea. It makes it too easy for something to go wrong and then everyone blames the person who was just trying to help out.

If they watch the video I am going to post and they still can't figure it out then hacking the firmware is just not for them.

I will do it in a similar style to this video.

I think that all depends. If your doing it on the GF1, that would be perfect for those users and thier arn't that many instructions on that than the GH1 but for someone who's following along with a GH1, it might be a little confusing for a few people although it might not make a difference either.

Thanks, I just subscribed. I will be looking forward to this video. May I make some suggestions?
I am a noob...SO maybe from doing the ptool to uploading the firmware to camera step by step. Thanks so much for this.
