GH1 - Filming fast objects

Just to verify; I think that I read here once that filming fast moving objects in AVCHD 1080p format can coming out very blurred and jumpy and that fast moving objects and action scenes would be better to be filmed in 720p format. Am I correct in thinking this??

On the unhacked GH1 this is the case, although the opposite is true on the GH2, and on the GH13 it probably doesn't make much of a difference. Keep in mind 720p AVCHD on the GH1 is 60fps.

How many fps is the 1080p format and what about the 720p mjpeg format? Is that 60fps as well?

(PS. I have the PAL version of the GH1)

An unhacked GH1 (NTSC) is 1080 60i... I'm just assuming PAL is 50i. The 720p mjpeg is like 30 fps. There was an old video I think Barry Green did where he compared filming cars moving horizontally across the screen in different camera settings - and then edited them different ways - and showed the results. I'll see if I can find it, that may be of some help for you.

Unhacked GH1 is not quite 60i. The camera records in 60i, but the sensor outputs in 24p so while editing you wouldn't get as much time stretching latitude as you would if you shot in the 720p 60 fps mode which outputs at 60 fps.

Shoot 720p 50fps at 1/250 or 1/500 and you will have blur free video at the expense of the subjects moving across he frame strobing a little. But they will be sharp and well defined and perfect for precessing in image stabilization software like mercalli, deshaker etc.

24p in a 60i stream and 25p in a 50i stream. JDS did that test and showed different methods for converting 60p in post to 24p, not a codec stress test. I believe it is a stick in the workflow section.
