Those of you that have cabled a boompole . . .

. . . what exactly do I need? I'm interested in adding an internal cable to a Gitzo GB0504 and have never done it before.

Be careful - an internal cable can move and cause noise.

In the UK internal cables are almost never used because of this very reason - cables are normally wrapped round the outside of the pole.

An actual hair tie w/ an addition of a plastic ball bearing on each end of the tie to help secure your hair. In this case, the hair tie is used to secure the XLR cable to your boompole. It's also a very good alternative to RipTies or any kind of adhesive tape like velcro. Hair ties are also inexpensive!

here in South Africa, I can't find the ball hair ties, apparently not cool to where them anymore, but that us the best way to get the cable onto the boom,

hey derrick, try buying some elasticated thread - any elastic type stuff. you can make all sorts of nifty ball type ties with it, or just tie it straight to the pole. nice stuff...

personally, i swear by internal cables - i cant stand exo cables, and if you learn to use an internally cabled pole, noise is never an issue.

This is something I think I would like to try. Do you just drill a couple of holes in the pole at either end?

Nope. Maybe at the top a simple hole with a grommet would suffice but if you're using a straight cable it needs to exit straight out the base of the pole so you can pull it taut in use. Loom Audio has pictures of their cabling arrangements on their website - they might give you some ideas if you want to try DIY.

MattinSTL used an internal on O2 and it was the best sound we've ever gotten...couldn't have anything to do with Matt's mad skills, though, could it?

Cedric and others - to be honest... DIY internal cabling is tricky. Really tricky. Maybe less tricky in the states than here in South Africa. but I once cabled an old pole of mine - had to find a guy to BUILD the coiled cable for me (I prefer coiled, less maintenance - if you go straight, you may as well use an external cable) with a heat gun. MISSION. and the pole jammed ALL THE TIME.

my ktek pole however - AWESOME. never jams and has worn really well, with an average of 6 days a week work on it over the two or so years i've had it. i strip it occasionally and service it, and it never lets me down...
