So I've had a FD Adapter for my GH1 for a while now, and could never get it out of "wide open"/change apertures. Is this an issue with the adapter, or all adapters in general? I'm shooting a film in couple weeks and would like to use my FD Primes, any suggestions?
What adapter are you using? I have the RainbowImaging one and it works just fine. You can "lock" the aperture on the adapter (after mounting the lens) which will allow you to change aperture through the lens. If you set the aperture ring on the lens to A, you can change the aperture with the "lock-open" ring on the adapter.
Just remember to mount the lens when the ring on the adapter is "open" and then "lock" afterwards.
It might be a bit confusing, but the aperture is "locked" when the adapter shows the word "open" at top (when mounted to your gh1).
The words on the adapter show you in which way you have to turn the ring, not what it is set to right now.
Example: the adapter is on your gh1 and you're looking at it so you can see the sensor. Turn the ring of the adapter counter-clockwise, then attach the lens. then turn the ring back (clockwise). You should be able to change your aperture now.
With many of the cheap Canon FD adapters, it's easy to attach them in a way that fails to engage the iris actuator lever that sticks out of the back of the lens. When this happens, the iris will be stuck in wide-open position regardless of where you set the aperture ring. It helps if you give the adapter a counter-clockwise half-twist before twisting it clockwise to engage the lens.
when the FD lens is engaged with the ADAPTER it should look like this inside.
you can just make out the little pin from the adapter on the right of the lens aperture part of the lens.
i keep my adapters locked with insulating tape, when i load an FD i insert the lens so the aperture spring bit is before the adapter pin then rotate it until it clicks in.
Wow thanks for all the replies, it was indeed the way the pin goes into the mechanism, now I just look underneath when connecting to lens and viola it works, thanks guys!
