Panasonic have pulled the gh1 v1.2 s/w initial release and uploaded a new v1.2 for download, allegedly the first release didnt have the battery recognition? Anyway, if you need v1.2(why not) and you need 3rd party batteries(why not/cheaper) go here for the windows download, sorry that the mac s/1 didnt seem to get downloaded but maybe somebody else made and ealry discovery on the mac1.2 s/w too. Either way its only an exe file so if you can get to a pc you can do it there too. If you downloaded already from the site and installed, sorry but your stuck.

I doubt whether they will repeat the mistake next time - so if it's indeed possible to use the withdrawn firmware with the GH1 now, you'll be stuck at that firmware level forever if you want to keep using 3rd party batteries. And if you haven't upgraded the firmware at all so far in order to keep using the 3rd party batteries, and you risk using one of these supposedly withdrawn versions, but the withdrawn version does block 3rd party batteries anyway, then there's no going back... a bit russian roulette perhaps.

Whoa, cool. I downloaded it pretty soon after it was uploaded last night, I wonder if it'll work for me? About to try, will report back. I upgraded on the Mac, unfortunately I already formatted the card after upgrading so I don't have a copy in case I did get the first version.

Edit: Awesome, it worked! I got an extra battery when I ordered my camera from masonjersey on eBay. Pretty rad firmware update after all. Of course if they do another firmware update and it has some worthwhile features I'll probably upgrade again.

Click DOWNLOAD ... and you would be happy (or not)

Im confused, this is the original file that allows use for 3rd party batteries? I thought the whole issue was that Panasonic removed the file and now its only circulating on unofficial sites?

I'm completely confused, just D/L ed the file and in info it was created 9.09 this morning, so I'm guessing this is the amended version?

It's fantastic, if somebody can READ :-)))))

Look above at DATE ... 2009-09-15 and 2009-09-18 ... oooouuuuhhh this today! New-new-new-squaredance-make!

GH1 V12.exe , there exists no version V1200000001 :-)

Yes but I understood there are two V12 files floating around, one that Panasonic removed from their site that allows use with 3rd party batteries is the one Im looking for.

I think I will wait till this shakes out. Question, what would you be stuck forever with this version. Or do you mean you will be stuck until the next firmware (if they do one) comes out.

If anyone can write a shore description of what is going on and that would be great. Lot's of info above, but a little confusing for sure.

If I come across anything I will do the same.

Any other new features to the update?

Think I will just wait till things shake out. + I am on a Mac.

:)

The first firmware update (some weeks ago) disabled 3rd party batteries.

Panny posted a new update in the last day or so containing additional updates, and when they posted it, according to some reports they forgot the 3rd party disabling bit. Some people downloaded that version and mentioned the omission on forums. Panasonic then withdrew that version from their site and posted a new, 3rd-party-battery-disabling version, and that's what you can now download from Panasonic. If you want the accidentally-released version, you need to find it from a non-Panasonic source. And you need to be sure of what it is, if it's vital to you to use 3rd party batteries, as you can't go back to the original firmware if you discover that you've accidentally installed a 3rd-party-battery-disabling version.

What does seem to be confusing is whether the now-withdrawn version actually applied to the GH1 and if so, exactly where it's now being hosted. Perhaps a little careful reading of the links in this thread would find the answer, or googling, but personally I'm happy to remain in the dark as I don't have a 3rd party battery.

Downloaded the update yesterday and the binary GH1__121.bin has filedate 15.09.2009 18:13
The one I just downloaded has file date 18.09.2009 09:09.
Filesize is the same, hexcompare shows loads of differencies.

Unfortunately I do not have 3rd party batteries to try out and confirm if the 1st one from 15.09.2009 would work ok with it.

If somebody wants to try it out. It's here

Please let us know if it works.

I can confirm the early GH1 firmware kassu put up does let the GH1 use 3rd party batteries again. I haven't tried the second updated Panasonic "fixed" and don't really see any reason to. I didn't actually test anything, just powered it on and saw that it worked, unlike before with the 1.1 firmware which would give an error and shut down the camera.
