until the next firmware update comes along, and then you'll have to choose whether you want to keep using those cheaper batteries, or take whatever the new firmware offers - and have to replace the batteries with Panny ones, so buying the cheaper batteries may turn out to be false economy.

I need to by a second battery for my GH1. A Panasonic branded one, will cost $190 AUD.
I think I can get four Brand X for the same money.

Of course it could be a false economy if the next month's firmware update will bring 24 Mb/s data rate, HDMI output while recording, 800x1920p wide screen without line skipping.....

....I think i should stop daydreaming....

Given 3rd party batteries don't actually work (except by this fluke) I'd imagine it may get really hard to find the 3rd party batteries that were made for the G1 and GH1. I've got mine since it came with my GH1 bought on ebay from masonjersey. Even though it now works with the magic firmware I'd say buying batteries based on that would be a bad long term investment.

I think the battery was made by Zeikos but I no longer have the packaging and the battery has no manufacturer name on it. I do remember searching for it on their web site (to see if they would do anything about it no longer working) and not finding the model number listed.

The firmware that works in my GH1 has a MD5 checksum of feb92634ea3c83edba243024bc595e95

I'm using for all my cameras (Canons, Panas, Fuji ...) only Chinese 3rd party all working well.
Delivered next day, arrived within 1-2 weeks, all prices include free shipping.

I'm currently broke. So I could use the ability to use a $15 battery. Just a temporary solution but I'll be in Paris for a few days and I could use that extra power.
I will probably update the next time if it's something significant.

Hi, i'am searching for the early 1.2 firmware update that works with 3rd party batteries? I need it for mac, can anyone help me out?

Dont forget - once you have installed the NEW 1.2 you wont be able to back track to the older 1.2 which allows for 3rd party batteries

The camera wont allow 'older' firmware to be installed. You can only move forward.

Just got two third party batteries for 21AUD each from ebay and ... guess what: they work with the 'special' 1.2 firmware update. Sorry Panasonic, I cannot afford the 190AUD price tag for your battery.
