GH1 at Sundance!

Thnx again guys...! 6 days and I can confirm officially and say what the film is.... (I think)
now my big issue is.... GETTING there! There are no god dang tickets left to anything cool and almost no lodging that is not RIDICULOUSLY expensive.... anyone have any tips??!!? I'll sleep in a tent if I have to. I'm going.

Sundance is held at Park City, right? When I go skiing in the area the best lodging deals are always in Salt Lake City proper. It's about half hour to 40 mins away by car. Look on hotwire.com or make a deal with Shatner. I just looked and hotel rooms can be found for $60 a night, car rental is <$20/day. Or perhaps someone wants to get a roommate. Tent is an option too, I've done that :)

Yeah that's kinda my issue.... I can't drive right now... when I moved to NYC from FL I never got my NYC drivers liscense because I really don't drive much here and so my liscense is suspended right now in fl for some BS that I have to fix.... so I have to either stay close or taxi or something and that can get pricey... but thanks I'll look into it or look into going with someone who can drive and rent the car.

$20 a day car rental? seriously?

I would rent a car if you can. everyone says parking is scarce but that's not true. There is a garage (it's expensive) at the far end of main street across from the Treasure Mountain Inn that usually has free spaces. I think it's $20/day. and you can walk from one end of main street to the other in 30 minutes.

there are also free shuttles you can catch. the fest runs shuttles from venue to venue (theaters are not all within walking distance to each other). some of the resorts offer shuttles to main street, like The Canyons. http://www.thecanyons.com

Shatner was the answer. Should of known to always trust Captain Kirk... now the thing is I can't book it because I don't know the date of the screening yet and I don't think I can do the whole 10 days.... probably only going to go for a few days...

Zak.. are there certain days that are cooler than others? Any secret tips? Again thanks everyone for the help! Guess I'll have to wait to book till after Dec 6....

The first weekend is the best. opening night and thru the weekend. once you hit monday and tuesday, a lot of people start going home. I even know some people part of the fest that leave early. i think last year I was there until the following wednesday.

Interesting... the site certainly didn't quite make it clear how to get the proper tickets... after some very odd e-mails where I and the sundance staff both used the words "fudgeramuzzled" to explain my confusion... apparently I already have a ticket... to the short and whatever feature it opens for... but I won't know when until Dec 6th... so it could be any day... so she told me to register for the opening weekend lotto.... which I did.... it's all so very odd, but so am I, so I guess that's fine.

Which "ticket package" did you get that allows you to movie hop? I think I get into my one thing and I get one 'credential pass" whatever the hell that is to get into some party or something.... I'm so lost on this... I guess this is good to go before I try and enter my own film. I'll have some idea.

I am definitely going to shoot a little documentary short of my experience and you'll all be sure to see it here.

Congrats on the news; but I remember this lil news bite:

DP NANCY SCHREIBER WINS SUNDANCE “EXCELLENCE IN CINEMATOGRAPHY” AWARD FOR “NOVEMBER”, PSYCHOLOGICAL DRAMA SHOT WITH PANASONIC AG-DVX100’s -2004

Last year I did these videos and got press credentials for me and my team. it's the equivalent to an all access badge. On a side note, doing these interviews at Park City introduced us to a lot of great people who we now count as genuine friends. In fact, I didn't see a single movie last year. But had a lot of meetings and made a lot of new friends.

This year our lodging and all access badges are covered by the festival but I can't say why and for what until the festival is over. It's a secret. For now. :)

I know I'm not allowed to say anything either. Just make a lot of shhhhhh sounds. It's all so exciting! 5 more days.....

That was a great little doc on distribution. I enjoyed it. I've been thinking about these issues as well. I'm sure all fil.... ** cough ** movie makers do.

Congrats!!

We've stayed in Salt Lake City some years, but last year we stayed at the Marriott Mountainside. It's way better not to drive back and forth to SLC every night. You can also find people who do room shares on craigslist if you don't mind. Hotels in Park City are scarce and expensive in general, but it's worth a look off of the Sundance lodging page. We've always rented a car, but you can take a shuttle or try to find a ride to Park City, and then the bus system will take you everywhere you need to go for the festival.

It's always been very cold, so dress warm!! (you'll probably want something warmer than a top hat)

Most of the celebrities are there for the first few days, and then you'll see some here and there... if you're into that. The best place to get photos of A-listers are at the venue their films are playing at, a little before the showing. We are always asked what celebrities we saw, so we make sure to get some photos of some while we're there. You can get into venues sometimes if you just look like you're supposed to be there. We walked right into the swag lounge one year and nobody said anything... but we didn't really know what to do once we were in there. :)

The midnight sci-fi/thriller screenings are always pretty fun. Last year we saw Splice.

Have fun!

Thanks for the tips! T-4 days till I can be more specific.. in the meantime, here is a cool new monitor I got the swivels to work in portrait or widescreen mode. I mean I guess you could turn any monitor on it's side but I think every monitor should have this swivel option as web browsing is so much better in portrait mode and normal computer work, blu-ray viewing is best in widescreen:

Enjoy....

You know from looking at it in this small window rather than the full screen, it looks like I have a gigantic ipad... but I'm thinking tablets ARE stuck at 1024 width correct?
Are there any websites that really take advantage of 16 x 9 width correctly? Most sites leave huge spaces on both sides and only take up the middle of the screen (usually no more than 1024).

congratulations. i'll be there too so please drop the name of the picture when you can.

Hey Zak - what dates are you going and do you stay in Park City or Salt Lake City? 2 more days till I find out what's the dillio and I book with Shatner negotiating for me. ;) Would love to meet up.

Ok, it's past the 6th so I can name drop at least ONE of the projects now, it is a short film called Awol.

Still waiting on the other hat I was an Actor in. I was Sound Mixer / boom op for Awol. (Last time I'll be doing that)

And not to toot my own kazoo, but wooooooooahhh does Sundance do something for you because... well let's see how to explain this.

There are about 8 billion people in the world. Out of those there is a rough estimate of 2-4 million 'actors' out there.... out of that estimate there are only about 400,000 or less working actors.. (even getting a small amount of pay like... cab fair..) out of that rough estimate there are only 200,000 registered SAG (Screen Actors Guild Actors) who acting is there chosen and "tax declared" profession.

I refused to join SAG at the current time because there was too much money in non union projects and I was not a big enough name to turn them down...

IMDBpro keeps track of everyone and keeps a running #rank of all actors in the world like hollywoods Q number system (measures an actors pull and public name recognition / popularity) the imdbpro calls it the "starmeter" but it's baically the same thing. Currently, Daniel Radcliff is the most in demand and well paid actor in the world for instance, because of the overwhelming popularity of Harry Potter. Johnny Depp is somewhere around #3 or 4 in the world.

Before Sundance I was sitting somewhere at around 300,025 thousand in world rank... not great, but nor horrible considering.... but in the last week my "starmeter" rose 640% and I am now ranked at 99,397! Woooohoo, that beats half of sag and I am not even a SAG member yet!

blackout-starmeter.jpg

So look out Johhny Depp and Daniel Radcliff.... only 99,396 positions up to go!!!! (cue "Eye of the Tiger" theme song and workout training montage & Prince - "Baby I'm a Star")

Hey guys it is getting close to sundance time and I REALLY need help finding a hotel that is close to park city with some sort of shuttle or something because the person I was going with who could rent a car dropped out. I had a while week planned at days in midviolle which is about 25 min away from park city and it was under $600 for flight and room for the whole week. Now I am screwed. I can't rent a car because my license is screwed up I ran over three roaming llamas and some kinder gardeners 4 years ago after a serious mix up involving DMT, aliens, and strange man named Saint Germain.
