GH1 Arrived today - Premiere strobe issue

Hello All,

I've been lurking these forums this past week as I made the decision to purchase a GH1. It arrived today and I've begun the fun process of learning how to work with this bad boy.

Trying to work directly with 720 60p files from the camera. I am using the template for AVCHD 720 60p in premiere for my project / sequence. When I play back a clip in the preview window, or drop onto the timeline and play from there, it plays back with this very strange strobing / pulsing problem. These clips play fine outside of premiere.

Any ideas?
 
It seems to be something more than that, perhaps I'll shoot some video of the playback. I also took a look at my processor use, and I'm not hitting 100% during playback.
 
Running a 2ghz Core 2 Duo, 4gb ram, 8800 GTS, Win 7 Ultimate, 2x 300GB SATA 7200 rpm in RAID 0.

Premiere CS4, fully updated.

The strobing also includes everything in the frame deforming (like, the shapes change) and then snapping back. Very strange.

By the way, this forum seems great. I really appreciate the help already, and I can't wait to get into production on a few projects. (Shooting my first real estate video next week, hopefully I'll have my workflow figured out by then).

Looks like your CPU isn't up to snuff for native AVCHD using Premiere Pro CS4.2, My i7 barely edits native AVCHD in Premiere CS4... Now, in Edius Neo it's a different story.

That software looks very nice, I'll download the demo when I get home and give it a whirl. Any chance it'll handle the 1080p24 pulldown removal?

Also, because it sounds like you know your business, is it possible to edit off of a USB 2.0 external drive or is that frowned upon? My system drive is RAID 0, so I'm not sure which is better to edit off of.

Yes, it does the pulldown no problem.

Yes, you can edit off of a USB2.0 HDD.. I was editing off of a USB 2.0 SDHC card adapter in the video. You will still be limited by the throughput of USB2.0 so you may not be able to do 3+ streams off of the drive, but with AVCHD you could easily do 2 off of the drive (I can do 2 off of the card).
Not having to transcode is beautiful.
 
Just spent the last hour playing with Edius Neo 2.5, and wow, what a difference. It's like all the hassle just disappeared! And when I exported, it looked great!

The video would always play back perfect, but the audio would be screwed up until I rendered (but it seemed to render pretty fast). I probably do need a faster processor, will this software use 4 cores?

Yep.. it sure will.. I've been trying to tell people about how great the new Neo 2.5 is with AVCHD files.. Edius 5.5 should also perform as well with AVCHD and it's due out next month, dunno if you'd need that though.
The audio sounds fine on my i7.. it is a bit choppy with more than one layer on my i5 laptop.. but hey.. it's a freakin LAPTOP editing full frame AVCHD footy!
 
Audio is playback choppy in the timeline on my 2006 Dell laptop - 2GHz Dual Core until rendered also so that's normal with less powered laptops. I do have the optional higher-end dedicated video card in it but I guess that doesn't make much of a difference.

Another thing that I find handy is the AVCHD Preview player software that comes on the CD. Only problem with it is that it plays back video clips all washed out but it is a quick way to check the video flies for other reasons and the audio isn't choppy. It does occasionally skip the video/audio but that is again because of my underpowered laptop.

I'm having this same problem... will upgrading to a RAID hardrive help?
 
Check out Neo 2.5, the demo is linked in a previous post in this thread, I was pretty amazed how much better it handled the .mts Files. (Mad props to ATL Media Group)
 
the reason I ask is that I see on the Edius Neo site it says

"ATA100/7200 RPM or faster hard disk recommended RAID 0 is required for HD editing"
 
That is for editing uncompressed HD or multiple streams of Canopus HQ codec HD files... You can edit multiple streams of native AVCHD because of the lower bitrate without a raid0.
 
ATL, could you go over your method for creating a 24fps timeline for use with 720 60p footage? It seems there isnt' a preset for that.
 
Sure.. start new project.. From the New project window select "Generic OHCI HD 24hz 1280X720 (or 1920X1080) 23.98p" or click "New Preset" if that is not available and select it from the "24hz" section. Click OK... now start the project.
