Interesting. I have to say, now I have a 7D and a GH1, I weirdly appreciate how good the GH1 is. I'm not saying one is better than the other - just that the GH1 is really an out and out consumer camera - but it really punches above its weight. And when you hear about the 7D overheating, you think about the GH1 happily shooting until the card is full with no problem - (albeit with an inferior codec)
I think what's gonna happen is that many will get their first taste of the action on a GH1 or 7D as these are more affordable than the 5D. I am really grateful for that, just so long as we all realise that come next January there may be some interesting replacements about to come on the market.
Mark IV with it's DIGIC V video CPU will be first, probably and most certainly very expensive.
Then I can't wait to see what Panasonic do with the GH2 come the Jan / Feb trade shows. I am sure they'll have an announcement one year on from the GH1.
7D is great but I'd prefer to wait for a bigger leap.
The GH1 may be much better to handle than the 5D but this got me thinking... both cameras need such careful handling to get the best results out of them, that it kinda makes the GH1's ease of use a bit of a none-issue.
I was gonna stick with the GH1 for it's small size and c-mount lenses too. But I just wasn't expecting what I just witnessed at ISO 800 on the big screen... GH1's colours are 40% less saturated and the dynamic range & resulting contrast is almost 50% flatter than the 5D's.
Here are some frame grabs from FCP 7.0 of my footage shot in France. All F4, 1/30, ISO800. GH1 was with kit lens. 5D was with Sigma 17-35mm EX F2.8 stopped down to F4. Both at 28mm fov.

The 5D is a lot more vibrant here. Canon's white balance gives a VERY warm cast to indoor lighting so I changed the GH1's WB to compensate. The auto-WB GH1 shot was a lot colder, almost grey.

5D
The 5D shot almost looks like it was lit from below whilst the GH1 shot is in natural light. In fact the lighting is the same on both, from flood lights below the tree. The GH1 does a rubbish job here, frankly.
Look at the sky. It was blue, just after sunset. The GH1 renders it completely grey as if it was cloudy while the 5D has a vibrant range of tones all round.
But how I loved my GH1. It was like a second girlfriend. It's such a great camera to use, so much cheaper than the 5D, so much nicer to look at and to have on you, and so much fun. Damn!!
