GH1, 5D, and HVX together in a video!

Take a look. The GH1, 5D, and HVX have all been cut together in this video I did with a couple of friends. The different cameras and glass are labeled.

The goal of the film is to show the different capabilities of each camera in a way that is interesting to watch and has more artistic value than chart tests or side-by-side shots.

The lenses and camera used for each shot are listed on each shot, a version without the text is coming soon.

The 5D footage was shot 1080/30p, slowed to 24p with Cinema Tools.

The HVX footage was shot 1080/24p and 720p for the time-lapse. Utilized Letus Extreme 35mm adapter for most shots.

The GH1 footage was shot 720/60p, converted to 24p with Compressor or straight in the timeline in Final Cut Pro depending on the shot.

Footage was edited in a 720p timeline.

Edited in Final Cut Pro.

Color Graded in Magic Bullet Looks.

Music: "The Ocean (Sun Version" by The Bravery from "The Sun and the Moon Complete."

Please feel free to post any comments or questions.

And of course, if you like it, please like it or comment on Vimeo.

Why not use the Gh1 1080p 24p mode?

I usually use that mode but I decided I wanted to be able to use some slow motion, and to have some flexibility with tweaking the footage from the other cameras (stabilization, rotation, crop, etc) what I get from dropping 1080p footage in the 720p timeline...and since the GH1 performs great in 720p mode anyway and since it wasn't being used for the crane shots, etc, where it might need some tweaking I just went ahead and shot 720p. Shooting in the 720p mode also lessens the chances of mud and rolling shutter effects so it was a safer bet with the camera. The idea was to try and play into each camera's strengths a bit (you'll note the HVX doesn't get used much once the light starts to go) and that the 5D doesn't pan at all.

Interesting. I still think the Gh1 has the nicest look. The HVX looks dated and something about the image just isn't as pleasing to my eye. Great idea for a shoot though thanks, man.

I really like the HVX shot of the flower that my friend Doug got but I see what you mean.

I think the HVX looks great when not cut together with the SLRs, but with them the 35mm adapter look is just too...different. By itself I really like it though...very filmic!

It's also worth noting that a lot of the HVX shots are through some really long glass (the Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8) which, although quite excellent, means that a lot of the shots are shooting through haze, etc. We didn't get down to the beach till later in the day, and at that point we weren't about to haul the whole HVX setup with us, so that's why just about all of the shots it's in are telephoto from the cliff.

Great footage. I'm not too interested in the technical difference, what matters to me is that the shots look wonderful.
What did you use for panning?

I was worried because I bought a Gh1(not arrived ) not t2i or 7d, but every time I see something this good shot with my little camera ...

i'm still on the fence and haven't purchased one yet, but all my favorite shots in this video turned out to be gh1!
crippled codec aside, this camera still makes a great image.

the hvx w/ letus was handicapped with the haze and distance....images were much softer and diffused in comparison.

The codec is perfectly fine for the web which is where most our videos are going anyway, and is perfectly fine for medium definition screening, and according to some here HD screening. As long as you don't break it it holds up fine.

Yeah I don't know if we were totally fair to the HVX, not bringing it down to get some closer-in shots. However, in some ways that sort of is fair: the setup was too unwieldy and it was too dark and we didn't want to go through the hassle. Point: SLRs.

pretty much summed up my thoughts as well.
low bitrate = ok for web.

i'm planning to produce some stuff for broadcast tv in the bay area, but don't yet know if we'll need to deliver HD. if it's only SD, i feel the gh1 should be able to hold up.

As long as you don't cause mud or something that will show up. For general image quality purposes it will probably hold up fine for web and SD broadcast.

On another note, I am curious if Barry Green has watched this video and has any thoughts?

That's a great looking little film no matter the cameras used, well shoot and edited plus perfect choice of music. Love the mood of it. Very good job!

@averan, have a look the commercial I've made in 1080p in my sig link. Broadcast was only SD for which it worked perfectly but my client has shown it several times projected in FullHD at various corporate pow-wows and says it looks fantastic. Haven't had the opportunity to view it myself that way though. More info here.

Apologizes for thread-jacking Ben

Hey Ben, I merged your other threads together with this one. Next time just keep it all in one thread otherwise the discussion gets spread out.

Nice footage. :)

Martti you can thread jack me any day.

Glad you liked the video.

It all looked fairly coherent and while there was a difference between shots from each camera, they cut together very nicely. Did you have to post process shots to match them up ( beyond retiming ) or is this more or less how they were shot?

I did very light color correction....well it was heavy but it doesn't look heavy so I consider it light :)

But I didn't really go out of my way to try and make the cameras match up. Mainly I noticed the 5D got really red with what I was doing so I tried to avoid that, and the GH1 needed more contrast added to it because I had it turned way down. The 5D was turned down as well but I feel like when you do that on the Gh1 it's a little less contrasty and gets you a little better dynamic range. This was all shot at pretty much the same time and you can see in the 5D 15mm shot near the beginning pointed out to that rock formation that the ground is a little dark because I'm exposing for the sky, yet in the GH1 pan near the end of the film of the same area (I think it's currently the vimeo thumbnail/start frame thing) the ground is a little brighter and the sky is decently exposed.
