GH1(3) Vs Red?

So I saw this discussed on another thread and thought it could be talked about here as soon as kholi gets this going.

NO HATE at all. I think a comparison is more than welcome if someone would compare. I believe it is a great comparison.....I would call it a Pro vs. Amateur camera comparison?

It's not so much a comparison, I think. Although I'll do Shot vs Shot, both at their best. There's no comparison there, however, I think it'll show just how close the two are when in tip top shape.

And, that the GH13 footage with a Hot Rod PL mount and matching glass would see the footage EASILY intercut, pretty much indistinguishable is my wager.

Technology's advancing too fast, soon we'll be able to shoot HDR video or something. Prob have sensors seeing more light then the human eye

Since I'm not prejudice, I like ALL cameras I'd like to read or talk about it here.

Who's got the 4K res charts? Dh'O! never mind.

Who's got a film that needs a small cam that a RED won't work for?

Who's got a film that needs a locked down high quality cam?

...and which one of the RED or GH1 can shoot good footage at ISO 100K @ half a foot candle? Doh! Oh yeah - that was the D3s that got trounced in just about every other test, but was king of the hill in low light!

So, it's a case of the right tool for the job. Most scenes can be shot with any number of cameras and it's the DP that makes the difference. It's only when you get to the very few shots on either side of the 'normal' that having the right tool can make the difference, assuming you know how to use it properly!

when this goes down, run non-native 24p "C" settings with GOP of 12. I'd love to see how that compares since I think that is the pinnacle of performance for the GH1.

Hi-

I recently shot a promo trailer for a horror feature with a RED (not mysterium tho)

http://www.nightscapemovie.com

and having now shot a mess of random stuff with my (hacked) GH1 I can very unscientifically say that the GH1 footage is so damn close in quality as to be not worth nitpicking. For me the big difference would be in the ergonomics of each camera and suitability of use in a professional production environment, and the robustness of the files when it comes to post color correction and image manipulation.

The real test would be in comparing the two in a theater sized projection.

I'd say resolution chart shots would be much more informative as well as color charts to show us what is really going on rather than random shots where the quality difference is up to the viewer and less scientific. Gh1 hack looks promising and I would be interested to see how it matches up to red but the test would have to be done right otherwise it's just pointless.

I understand where you are coming from completely. That doesn't mean that it would be pointless. I just means that the point is different. Kholi's point appears to be, (we'll let him speak for himself, if I've just completely misunderstood him)....by looking at intercut footage, we'll see how these two cameras can effectively be used, without drawing any undue attention to the GH13 footage.

I for one, AM VERY INTERESTED in seeing the two cameras used together on a shoot. Looking at res-charts is also valueable....after seeing that, I like to see it, "in the wild"...used by a professional, in its best light/best usages...knowing its strengths and weaknesses, as well as knowing what the RED CAMERA can do....that the GH1 CAN'T do. I'd like to see this tool implemented (GH13) with the proverbial "big dog"....and if the two can "dance together".

Res charts will be help too. Inter-cut footy will be great to look at too.

I too would kill to see this. Someone posted that one video of red, canon 5dii and gh1 used together and intercut but I felt like gh1 got short shrift because they chose all the lamest and most out of focus shots to do the GH1 whereas Red did the best and most provocative shots so..I would prefer a more equal comparison where GH1 gets as much face time as red...

Great footage Mitchell! Do you have any GH13 footage you could post?
