Has anyone gotten this combination to work? The GH1 flys well with the stock lens but I haven't seen a recipe for the GH1 and the 20mm. I do weddings so having the lowlight capability of that lens would be useful for receptions.
I use 1.5 weights on the front & bottom but I've got a manfrotto quick release so that's added weight.
The proper solution is not to rely on a 'recipe' - you need to spend the time to understand the 'balence' of the merlin so you can set it anytime with any camera.
I still have to constantly adjust - it's a cow but with the manfrotto quick release it's great for weddings.
however, i don't think it is out of bounds to ask for a recipe, there are several threads on this board and many others about merline recipes. isn't that what the internet is (partially) for, to save time and share knowledge with others? sure i could spend hours doing the trial and error thing, but thanks to people who did share their info about the hmc150 and the 5d Mark II, I was able to get those cameras flying on the merlin in a fraction of the time it would have taken otherwise.
i thought about adding weight to the camera when the pancake lens is on, but I was hoping someone else had gotten it to work as is. perhaps it is just not possible.
surely if you're shooting weddings you'd need to get the camera off merlin and on tripod fairly quickly? thats why I'm using the quick release & merlin stand.
I use Manfrotto tripod & monopod so the camera simply moves from one to the other. I can dock the merlin on it's stand and be out there on a monopod within seconds.
I can give you some measurements if you want but I wouldn't rely on any 'recipe' I cooked up
I've has SO much better luck with a Glidecam 2000 than the Merlin with my GH-1. The Glidecam's design is just so much less prone to the "I'm on a Boat" wobble!
Though... I actually used that wobble to great advantage in one video: http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=519009664794
i've been able to get really smooth shots with the kit lens and gh1 on the merlin, much better sucess than with the 5d. of course the kits lens isn't fast enough to use during dimly lit receptions. it would be great to go inbetween the kit and 5omm with minimal adjustment, maybe i can find some kind of weight to equal the differences between the lenses.
