GH-1 vs. t2i - bring it!!

It was a very quick test 5 minutes before lunch ;-)
I also have an adapter for manual nikon lenses for the GH-1 but not for the canon.
Also the eos lenses would not work manually because of the missing exposure ring.

Funny... for the being so much sharper, I couldn't read the text on the board on the footage on the right... .

But I could see the wood grain and radiator much sharper - the canon wasn't crit focused on the chart. Notice behind the chart is sharper (wall, window sill, radiator) vs. the GH1 - the DOF is a few inches behind.

Nah more like someone pressed autofocus instead of critting the chart on both cams

Is there something wrong with the test? The GH1 has always resolved better on chart tests than the 7D so it's no surprise it would vs T2i which is an inferior camera to the 7D.

Here's two 100% crops of the close-ups for comparison. Right camera sharper? I don't think so. To me it looks like a SD image that's been sharpened, scaled up and then blurred 0.5 pixel. Left is not without some aliased pixeling problems but not near as crude as the right. Plus left image has that green-purple tinge in eye-brows, back-lit skin on cheeks and everywhere in the hair. Note that these crops don't show how movement emphasizes these artefacts. A good demonstration that the test charts Barry Green has done do have a bearing on how real images end up looking. Thanks robocut for taking the time to do the test and posting!

Nice observations though i'm still cautious considering, again, 2 different lenses, 2 different curves, and apparently from my eyes, two different focus points.

Though it's funny seeing everyone's various opinions.

Let's just say they're in the same league and call it a day LOL.

That's basically what I was saying. It's a wash. So IMHO features are what would differentiate the two... T2i better low light..... GH1 better as a video camera because of longer record times and swing out LCD.

I'm on the fence on this decision too... Detractors and advantages to both. I have been shooting with a friends 7d for a month though and I really do love it. The codec handles CC very well and it produces very well in low light. I have a clip here the first song that's all 7d. All shot at 1.2 wide open on a very nice 85mm canon lense.. A 2k lens makes a big difference. I think it handles low light and grads.. and shadows and murky areas very welll. I think if the GH2 were selling then that might be a good choice. Not being able to monitor is such a buzzkill....

So again. The T2i would probably make a fine second camera to the GH1 which was the original question I believe.

I think it will intercut fine if you reduce the contrast and try to get the settings similar. It might be slightly better in low light, and it will probably take nicer photos and just be better for photos.

That said, I just got the Lumix 20mm f/1.7 lens and I love it....it truly makes the GH1 a legitimate photo camera.

I'm torn as well, but already bought a GH1, so the T2i can KMA.

As I said before with low light, GH1 low light footage doesn't grain as quickly as the Canon Rebels - so you can get cleaner footage (albeit not as sharp in low light). Just download Lyric Shadow Highlight to add almost 2 stops of ISO in post.

GH1 will soon have 3d lens - that's got me pumped, though I hope it's not SD signals only for each eyeball stream...no clue how it would work.

I don't really agree... Panny and canon don't play nice together, imo. I guess some remastering off the scene files (or equivalent) would definitely help - but that's going to take some serious trial and error, and then still have to try and further match in post... to much work for me, I would shoot 2 GH1's any day.

The GH1 and the Canon don't cut together very well though. In my opinion WAYYYYY different looks.

5D and GH1 cut together pretty well. There are some specific shots in there where they really do because they're looking at the same thing (the waterfall.)

Maybe... I don't have experience with the 5D, but it appears to be a lot sharper than the 7D, maybe that's why it can cut. To me the 7D and the GH1 on the same subject.... world of difference.

Yeah. My point is just that the Canon "look" can cut together fine with the GH1, the "look" mainly seems to be an overly contrasted thing from people that don't know how to change the settings on their cameras. As for quality..well...lets just say there's a reason I like the GH1 and the 5D a whole lot more than the 7D and the T2i.

First off lenses - it's almost impossible to find a still lens that resolves less than any of the HDSLRs video image, Barry Green has shown this. (Unless you'll yank out the plastic from something like a old Instamatic™.)
Secondly, focus points - examine the close-up picture and you'll see that the back edge of her hair is slightly unfocused and same for the tip of her nose with the plane where the eyes and the hair front of ears are is being the sharpest part of the image. Even easier to judge this is by looking at the collar of her shirt. So both pictures are in focus.
Thirdly - just to humour you I've adjusted the curve on the left camera. And you know what? The difference gets even clearer. And notice how the eye lashes beneath the eye on left don't even show on right - it's again just some green-purple tinge there.

It is not an opinion the image on right has a lower resolved resolution, it's clearly visible.

Resolve less, true, but coatings can be different, explaining the purple tinge you're pointing out, which usually is a lens issue. and I don't think the DOF/focus point is the same on each camera, the DOF on the Canon is slightly shallower and the focus point to my eyes still looks a few inches behind the GH1.
