GH-1 vs. t2i - bring it!!

Alright everybody- I'm looking for input. I've got, (and love), the GH1 however, hate the amount of lowlight noise/banding this cam produces.

But for 800 bucks- is it possible that the t2i is a good buy for a second unit?? I'm attracted by the slightly larger (CMOS) sensor and the high ISO. I've seen some lowlight, (candlelight) footy- impressive.
I'm especially interested in pulling off some nice night time timelapses with it and any shooting just past magic-hour. --good detail in the blacks.

Please know hating, ex. "GH1 rules-t2i sucks, yadda yadda..."- just constructive feedback, and video links welcome.
I know Barry did a comparison with the GH-1 and 7D-- but t2i owners please chime in!!

 cheers all!

GH1 body is $300 new if you buy right and sell kit lens.

So $800 will get you:

a) GH1 + 20mm 1.7+ $100 for hookers

b) GH1 + FD 50mm 1.2 + FD 24mm 2 + $100 for hookers

c) T2i (whatever that is)

It's your choice, I know what I went with...

No hate all love man. :D

Yeah it's a great buy as a second camera, you can probably take better photos with it too. But when it comes to video the GH1 is the superior camera for myriad reasons...so you're asking the right question: is it worth getting as a #2 cam?

Yeah, if you need one. I also don't see any huge problem with getting it over a second GH1 even if the second GH1 is potentially cheaper. I would choose a T2i over a second GH1 as a B-cam (probably) for the fact that it is also a great photo camera, an area in which the GH1 is..well..sort of lacking.

I also feel that the GH1's low-light performance (for video) is severely underrated and, furthermore, the T2i is not a 5D :)

I'm planning on doing the same thing. The GH1 just shoots outstanding looking video in decent light. I have a number of things that I'm working on that call for lower lights conditions, for effect, and the dark-line banding of the GH1 is not going to allow me to use it. I think I've seen enough low light vids of the T2I to say that it might be the camera to try for this. I'm currently saving for one. I'll try it and if I like it, I'll keep it. If not, then I'll sell it. Simple as that.

Or get a good lighting kit and there won't be any problems with low light banding and such. That is the best way to make footage look better.

Thanks-
I'm not concerned with what $800 can get me. I've already spent $1500 last July on the GH1+kit lens- so thats a non issue+ why would I want to sell the kit lens, I think it works really well for me.
I've already got some FD glass- whicj I also love on the GH-1 but think I could also use on the t2i with an FD/EOS adapter, which I believe I have from an old DIY 35 setup.

I'll pass on the hookers:Drogar-Shock(DBG):
but thanks for non hatin'

FD/EOS adaptation is a little sketchy because it requires optics.

Really- what am I doing wrong then? Or do I have one of those first batch GH-1's with a funky sensor??

Maybe my eye is far more trained for it - but I see those pesky lines and lowlight artifacts in a lot of situations, on the lcd. I shoot a lot indoors- is this a problem??

I know to shot wit god lighting, I know this....but I want to shoot in a room with a 25W light and see NO LINES/BANDING/color NOISE etc.. Is this not possible??

But yes I do want better stills too--real timelapses

I'm about to make a choice between the T2i and the GH1 so this is very informative for me. I like that I can record without stopping on the GH1 (I shoot events so I need at least 45min of footage.. I can shoot in 12min segments but prefer not to.).

The GH1 isn't as good in low light with stock kit lens, what about with a fast prime?

Can I make it as good?

I posted a link to this thread in the Canon EOS 7d forum- but people are responding there as well.

Ben, (or anyone) can you comment on this:

originally posted by N.E.S.:
"I owned a GH1, now own a T2i. Yes the T2i is better in low light. One thing I must note though is the GH1 has banding in low light and the T2i has none, which to me was an easy deciding factor on which to keep.

Overall though IMO the T2i is a better camera for video and at least x2 as an actual photo camera. The T2i uses newer technology and simply compresses less allowing for more information and better video quality when used correctly.

If you are looking for that amazing low light camera though it would be neither the T2i or Gh1 but the Canon 5D."

How about this?

From the YT page:

"DMC-GH1 was tested under low light condition with Canon FD Lenses attached using Rayqual adapter.

-FD 28mm/F2.8, 50mm/F1.4 and 135mm/F2.5 were used at full open aperture.
-GH1 at creative video mode (Program AE mode)
-ISO fixed at 800
-1920x1080 AVCHD, 60i/24fps mode
-Transcoded to HDV (TMPGEnc) to edit and exported as mp4(1280x720) and m2t (1440 anamorphic x1080) on Premiere

As compared experimentally with my old HDV comcorder Sony HC3 (11 lx at 1/60 sec shutter speed), I estimated that GH1+ FD F1.4 lens corresponds 1.4 lx at ISO 800 and 1/30 sec, which is much better than the newest and brightest Sony handycam model, HDR-X520V whose brightness specification is 3 lx at 1/30 sec.

I appreciate those old canon MF SRL lenses for shooting bright and shallow DOF video with Panasonic GH1 body very much."

There is no doubt that the Gh1 is very good in low light.

The only trouble is, you can push the 7D (haven't used the t2i) to insane levels at night...it gets noisy, but it doesn't get banding.

Even with a Lecia Noctilux (F1.0), I'll see banding on the GH1 as soon as I get the wrong background or am too far underexposed.

Now some might argue that you shouldn't be filming in stuff that dark for most kinds of work anyhow...but it's fun to try.

If the T2i holds up similarly to the 7d, I'd say it'd make a great b-cam to the GH1.

Okay.. so the GH1 is very good in low light.. I don't need to film in completely dark environments, but sometimes I'll shoot a dinner party or an awards ceremony that will be quite dark.
Thoughts on that type of lowlight from the GH1 and T2i?
Maybe compared to a pro video cam like the EX1/3 or even the HMC150?

If you want to see some low-light footage from the T2i, check out the last 45 seconds or so of this piece…

This was shot at night, with only the lights on the trailer, some hanging lights and a street light above. All of the night stuff was shot with the Canon 50mm f1.2L at ISO 800.

That's pretty impressive... I think I gained 10lbs watching it tho.

Now, how about for 45+ minutes of straight shooting? Overheating an issue?

What framerate would you like that at? 60p? 24p?

I've also got a 7D and a 5DII. Any particular tests the class would like to see?

(Keep in mind, I don't have charts to shoot, so keep it simple.)

Yes, I shot a wedding a while back using the 20mm 1.7 with no light at all on the camera. just check out my site on the link below. I actually managed to get a few shots at a low lit reception with the kit lens. The kit lens, at least to me, seems to put the GH1 in the ballpark of an HDV prosumer cam in terms of low light.

thanks stephenmick- good example- not interested in 7d or 5d,(at least in this thread...although thanks for flaunting it in my face!!):violent5:
referring to your vid- at 2:06 there is some noise in the blacks next to woman's chompers- but thas to be expected- I guarentee if I shot that on GH-1 it would be riddled with nasty purple streaks ARGGHHHH!!! But I like the look very much of this cam- thanks for sharing

as far as a test- shoot me 1 candle only- and move around in room, shoot 1 40 watt or other low wattage bulb in room and dance around a bit-
AND SIMON SAYS......hand over the 5d NOW!!!!!!

Thanks
