GH-1 vs. t2i - bring it!!

Not to argue.... I'm just trying to find the best camera for my money. Can you see the 30% difference? I think they both look GREAT... Maybe on the big screen the T2i would outshine the GH1 in good light?

My needs:
Long record times
Good low light (good being as good as my HMC150)
Good 720/60P for slowmo
Little risk of overheating.. I need to shoot at least 45 minutes in a stretch.

So, is the GH1 for me, or will the T2i work just as good for my needs?

And by "buy right" you mean from the back of a van in a shady neighborhood?

Cheapest I've seen the kit go for from a reputable dealer is around $1150 (B&H or Adorama with 3% Bing cahsback).

You could probably get around $600-650 back for the lens, but you have to pay ebay and paypal their cuts, as well as deal with the hassle of selling and shipping.

So best case, around $550 for the body . You might have to skip on those working girls.

Nah body was $300 for me. I bought at 20% BCB.

ATL your in my boat buddy... GH1. btw which are you saying is 30% more?

Alignment1... hrm... that's got to be up to you - I don't do much timelapse (and a gh1 cant do it?) Sounds like more of a controlled situation where you have all the time in the world to get the best possible picture...

I have yet to see "BANDING" :-Laugh(DBG)-1:-Laugh(DBG)-1 I mean FPN... And I put it in some pretty dark situations (live sporting event with the lights out) with the kit lens and 50mm 1.8 recently... Didn't notice anything on the 43" HDTV when playing back... although I haven't scrutinized every frame yet.

Alignment1 said about the T2i: "I have to admit, for the price point I am attracted to the larger sensor, I know it's not a full frame like the 5D but it's like 30% larger than the GH1."

Sounds good to me... Guess I'll go with the GH1. Love my HMC150, but the shallow dof calls mah name.

Ah...

Yeah yeah... dof this and dof that :)

I don't shoot movies and my clients are supper happy with the HMC footy, that's why I got to go with another HMC :)

I am still kicking around using the GH1 for a 4 camera shoot (which was going to be all HMC's)... yeah still thinking... hehe

Didn't JDS make a film that Barry produced that is being projected in a theater at the moment. Maybe JDS or Barry could comment on how they feel it holds up on that large screen. IMO from what I have seen in other venues, it's good, however at the cost of these cameras, I find it very very hard to complain.

BTW, Bloom shot tests of the GH1 with the others DSLR and I believe film as well; the results are supposed to be on line any day now..

Nice on the shootout

ATL just glad your not starting one of those "Trading my HMC for..." threads then :)

JDS's short screened at SXSW here in Austin. I sat in on the first screening at Alamo Drafthouse, and the film looked fabulous on the big screen. After seeing that, I have no doubt that properly-lit, focused and exposed footage from ANY of these HDSLRs is going to be "good enough" for the big screen. Really, the choice comes down to ergonomics, workflow issues and decisions that have more to do with personal preference than "this is better than that."

I haven't used a t2i and do believe it's better in low light but must add in the GH1's defense

1. YOU CAN GET RID OF THE BANDING and newer models don't have it, I rented a GH1 once that didn't have the problem at all.

2. GH1 FOOTAGE HAS VIRTUALLY NO GRAIN....this is why I like it better in low light. Because you can download a great free filter called Lyric Shadow-Highlight for FCP and it bumps up the brightness 2 stops and it works way better than the 3 way CC for brightening shots. Once you do this, you have a virtual ISO of 6400, maybe 12800 via Final Cut Pro/Lyric Shadow Hightlight (everyone download this btw if you haven't heard of it) and can have cleaner footage while the T2i introduces grain fairly easily (though it's still not bad and the image is definitely sharper than the GH1 in low light).

Absolutely 100% agreed.

Very true.... BUT... I think the debate is about how they perform when you don't have the ability to light the scene, or when you need to shoot for an hour straight.

Like a live event.

"This is better than that" for this purpose... is the debate.

The better camera in public discussions is the one you own. The better camera in your head is the camera you don't have.

Per the debate - We touched on the strengths/weaknesses of these cameras in a few threads now...

And what situation at an event are you not having the ability to add light?

At an event - imagine it hard to see your LCD screen unless its right in front of your face, making sure you have to hit the record button every time it stops recording (loosing some footage betwen), manually focusing on fast moving objects, then your cam overheats and you got to turn it off for 10 min... thats some of the downfalls of the canon lineup when it comes to their picture cameras having a video function...

That being said, if I shot shorts... Id have a 7d or 5d.

Honestly if you do this for a living most likely you can afford (EVENTUALLY) both a GH1 and a t2i...

Me personally, while the t2i would give you sharper stuff, I'd really miss using the GH1, it's just much more video friendly. I'm still debating if my 2nd DSLR should be another GH1 (or 2) or a T2i.

Very true.. I just don't want two DSLR's for video use only. I could care less about photos so it would be strictly for HD video.

I can afford to buy both, but don't want to. I'd rather spend the difference on rigging, lenses and other accessories to make the one I get better suited for video use.

I am still weary of showing up to a paid event with a DSLR no mater what it is... for me they are all lacking features I would typically need on at least my A and B cams... may be looking at using the GH1 as a C or D cam soon. I tried 2 canon vSLRs at events so far - I just wouldn't use them for paid gigs and risk not getting the shot.
