GH-1 Memory Card

things to remember.

Class 4 = 4MB
Class 6 = 6MB or stated otherwise
Class 10 = 10MB

MB= Mega Bytes
mb= mega bits

Always divide mb by 8 and you get MB

17mb / 8 = 2.125MB

So yes, a class 4 will work fine. but you should probably consider getting something faster due to it being a better investment for something you could use later on.

Panasonic specifically recommends Class 6 memory cards for the GH1. I've used Class 4 with it, but I'm just pointing out that the manual specifies Class 6.

Did anyone ever test whether there's a quality hit from using lower class cards? Just wondering if cards would ever work as a bottleneck and force the compression even lower.

I'm sure there is a reason why Panasonic "specifically" recommends class 6 cards in GH1's manual.

Isaac I was thinking that Kholi did this in one of the very early threads when he was going through testing. I could be wrong but I was thinking it didn't have an effect.

Yes, the reason could be a "better safe than sorry" recommendation. In other words, they might be aware that Class 4 is perfectly adequate, so therefore they recommend the next higher grade.

I've been using the same cards as I have for my HFS100 without thinking which are class 4 (and oddly, that manual is okay with class 4 for 24 mbs AVCHD), but I guess I should try and get a class six or two!

Ya you maybe right but since the price difference is not significant its better to pick up class 6 cards.

I use a Sandisk ultra II class 4, which is actually faster than some class 6 cards... That class system is pretty confusing.

Yes it might be for the burst shooting of stills in raw for which they recommend the faster card.

For video, class 2 card has been working great for me from the day one.

It is not confusing, it's very simple

Class2 ... guaranteed 2MBps writing
Class4 ... guaranteed 4MBps
Class6 ... guaranteed 6MBps

My cheap Transcend Class6 writes with 10-12 MBps, ALL my Class2/Class4/Class6 read with ~ 16-18 MBps.

My fastest camera is Canon SX1, which writes fullHD video 1920x1080 with 43 (!) Mbps (like Canon 5DMkII) - these are 5.4 MBps.

Lumix GH1 writes video with 17 Mbps, these are 40% from Canons speed - my Transcends Class6 are full okay for GH1

I do not know any prosumer camera, which needs more than Class6 = 6MBps.

I am in the same boat as the OP. I see that class 6 varies widely when comes to speed. Any cards that write/read 30MB/sec apart from Scandisk? Many descriptions in the online stores don't specify the speed.

I am buying cards both for GH1 and HMC150. Is that true that the write speed more depends on the camera/camcorder (bitrates?) than a card (as long as it is class 4 or 6) but read speeds would speed up transfer to a computer/storage?
