GH-1 and a 35mm adapter

Hi guys,

Does anyone know if there is an adapter for the GH-1 that will allow you to attach a Cinemek G35 adapter that uses a universsal 72mm camera mount?

Thanks,

Matt

Huh? What mount is the lens? It has to be a lens with a system mount, not an addon lens.

My apologies, I worded that wrong :) I've edited the question now! I'm actually looking to attach the universal 72mm cinemek G35 to this GH1.

Now why would you do that? The Cinemek G35 is for use with small sensor camcorders. As GH1 already has a 35mm movie size sensor the Cinemek is redundant.

It's closer than that on the GH1. In 16:9 movie mode, the GH1 is about 18 x 10. 35mm movie film, in 1.85:1, is 22x12. So the GH1 is a little smaller, but not a lot smaller, it's fairly comparable.

The G53 is for some other cams, but I thought it would be nice to see what it does to the GH1 as well. My guess is if you use a G35, it will get even more DOF.

EDIT: BY 'more' , I mean more bokeh... shallower DOF I mean!

1). You mean shallower DOF, not more DOF. More DOF would mean more things in focus if it meant anything.

2). You get the native properties of the lens. Same as when you put that lens on a 35mm adapter by on a HiDef camcorder. Same as using 35mm still lens on a GH1. The crop may be a little different but the lens retains it's native properties of how shallow or not it is or isn't at a given Fstop.

You're just going to add a tube in front of it that will reduce light and add grain for absolutely no reason. Your 200mm 1.8 will have the same DOF on teh Cinemek, on the GH1, or on the Cinemek Attached to the GH1.

Well some of these 35mm adapters can do full frame without cropping. So we're not talking about a super 35mm movie frame, but the larger still frame, and the accompany characteristics that goes with using the longer lenses and the coverage that still 35mm lenses entail. There is actually a big difference in the DOF between a 35mm adapter that can do the full frame and a GH1 sensor.

Is it enough to deal with the hassle and image degradation of a 35mm adapter? Not in my opinion. Better to use a real video camera with XLR inputs and a better codec, at least you get that benefit for using the 35mm adapter. With the GH1, you don't even get that so the benefit isn't so great.

There is a difference in the angle of view, which compared to the 35mm adapters we're used to means you have to stand a third farther back to get the same frame. So you stand back 1.3 feet vs. 1 foot or 13 feet vs 10 feet. The DOF is the same. I.e. the lens retains it's intrinsic properties.

Also. You know the GH1 shoots at 4k then down rezzes to 1080.

It wouldn't work anyway even if you can get a 72mm thread for the GH1. You would need a relay lens of some sort to actually capture the image being projected onto the G35's GG. It might work if you put a lens on to the GH1 and then strap the G35 ontop of that lens, but that would completely negate the point and quality would just be crap. This is why the relay lenses for 2/3'' cameras costs in the thousands and take years to develop.
