GF1 testing and footage goes HERE

Really sorry for being dumb here, I checked the settings sharing thread as well.
I just hacked my new GF1, and I only added a manual video mode yet, but I do have a question- when you are changing the exposure, what does it change in the video, in the real time?
I see it getting darker and brighter, but I don't get why? I thought that only aperture and ISO will affect video.
Second- the 1080 or FullHD, is it possible to get it on GF1? I am planning on importing the files into FinalCut later, what preferences in the hack should I use for the 1080 and my class 10 card?

I've managed to hack my GF1 that had the FW 1.22 although it didn't work at the beginning. I succeeded by unchecking the "prevent version compare" checkbox and just increasing the increment to 126. After that I made a new customed fw with the MJPEG hacks naming it 127. It worked.
BUT: It appears that the MJPEG HD is actually 1440x1080.. not Full HD (1920x1080) Did I do smthg wrong? I did check both boxes in the Ptool app?... !!! oh, I just got it. I had/have to enter manually the 1920. It's set on 1440.
OK, That's one, I'm gonna try.
But i still doubt a bit about the Quality. it says 128 in E1. What's the unit? What should I replace it with?
Thx for help.

Edit:
With GF1, is it anyway possible to get AVCHD in full HD? And 4.2.2 too?
I don't. Only MJPEG (for both hacks)...

Thx for feedback.

Hi @ all,

iv'e recently bought a GF1 and patched it with the least ptool version i've found (v3.51d), and i've tested quite much of the settings posted here @ dvxuser, including LPowells Peak Performance preset.

The thing is: all changes work as expected, manual control and such; even MJPG works great @ ~100mbps @ 422; but the great mysterium is: AVCHD seems unaffected, resulting in quite small files with low bitrate (around ~8mbps) and in some circumstances nasty image quality, especially in low light.

My AVCHD settings are:
50fps->25fps
60fps->30fps
Bitrates SH=50.000.000; H=32.000.000; L=unchecked; Overall=52.000.000; GOP=7
But as said, any setting is quite ineffective, even the Peak Performance one.

Is there something i've missed here? I'm totally new to that hacking thing, sorry

I'd be thankful for feedback!

As you may have already discovered, SH mode on the GF1 is actually "AVCHD-Lite", which records only 30fps inside a 60p container. This contains only half as much pixel data as the GH1's FHD and SH modes. As a result, the bitrate of GF1 SH videos is typically much lower than that of GH1 SH files. In addition, the AVCHD encoder's bitrate is optimized for well-lit scenes and its bitrate often drops to low levels in dimly lit situations.

I'm currently working on a patch specifically designed to optimize the GF1 and G2's 720p30 video mode. In the meantime, I'd suggest trying my Fast-Action 3-Frame GOP Patch, which can be found at the link in my signature.

Hello lpowel,

thanks for the reply!
I don't know if i got you right - is it normal that bitrate is at such low values @ 720p30? I mean the best results were something about 13mbit, and only at heavy camera movement and complex scenes (and yes, at sufficient light). I was the opinion that it's too low, even if the camera would be in it's unpatched status. unfortunately i did no tests before patching, instead going directly into patching right after buying.

I've tried that Fast-Action 3-Frame GOP Patch, resulting in no significant difference. I'm just curious about that. Is it just as much as i can get from AVCHD? Or is there something else i missed, maybe in the "test area" of ptool which is necessary? Regarding half the amount of pixels in comparison to the GH1 - doesn't that mean that half of the bitrate possible on the GH1 would be possible on the GF1? Or is THAT the limitation of AVCHD-Lite which is causing these low bitrates?

Anyway, probably the patch you're working at will be the solution of this mystery :)

The posterization in the dark areas of the background at 1:00 in your video can be the result of color or exposure grading during post-processing. If you can upload the original MTS file to Vimeo, I could examine it to see what the camera was able to capture.

Uploading a MTS right now!
Would like to get instructions on importing and exporting the files from FCP as well!
And can you use different color modes in video somehow? Didn't find it in the settings, but found online that you can have Vivid color setting on the GH1, is it GH1 only?

[/QUOTE]

higher Mbps are not a problem with the GOP1 patch:

50
32
22
50

GOP: 1

and you have 22-50MBit
