Getting ready to buy...

Ok, so I am getting ready to buy my 7D. I have been following the forums and reviews. I know the limitations and ready to take the challenge. I would like some input on other things I should get upfront with my basic kit.

I will be using it for mainly short films, docu-style pieces and human interest spots. I will be traveling internationally with it. What I am looking for is some guidance from those who have been using the Canon 7D in this situations. I am planning to start with the following as my starter kit then build from there.

- Canon 7D (have been considering the T2i but still waiting for footage reviews.)
- Canon 17-55mm f/2.8
- Tiffen 77mm UV Protector Glass Filter
- Kingston Elite Pro 16 GB 133x CompactFlash Memory Card
- Rode VideoMic

Here are some other things that I have been considering too. Not any any certain order, yet. What are your suggestions? What tripod and heads are you all using?
- Slider
- Follow Focus
- Matte Box
- Beachtek DXA-SLR or Zoom H4N
- Viewfinder
- LCD Monitor
- Stabilizer Kit

Thank you!

I purchased the Glidecam Pro 2000 and the LCDVF Viewfinder. I have yet to use both yet because I am waiting on the 7D to come.

Just that one lens? Seems like you're spending a ton on other stuff but not on lenses. You don't have to break the bank or get the top shelf stuff but its a bit disproportionate. You could have 2 good lenses for the price of the Canon 17-55 if your lens budget is only $1000.

You need a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4
50mm 1.8 is only $90
also a vari ND or some kind of ND if your shooting outdoors

Just one to start with. I have been torn between the Canon and the Tamron 17-50mm. But, have been leaning towards the Canon due to the reviews and other peoples opinions. I am also looking to buy the Canon 50mm or the Sigma 30mm along with the Tokina 11-16mm.

What lens do you have or recommend?

Thanks.

For about the same price as the Canon 17-55 you could have the 24-105IS. Also, I would personally get the cheaper Tamron 17-50. I've had that lens for ages for still photography and theres nothing horrible about it to rule it out.

I just ordered a new 17-55. Exciting!

The thing about the tamron 17-50 is there are quality control issues. Many have reported this after testing and they sent them back. If you get a good copy, and you know how to make sure you have a good copy then tamron is a great way to go.

There are also reports of quality control issues with canon glass but the incidents are much much more more isolated.

The 24-105 remains on my wishlist. There is one on craiglist for $800 but I have spending a bit lately. For the time being I will just have to use my non vibration control 75-150/3.5 AIS manual focus.

Yeah I'd suggest at least the 50mm- one lens is kinda pointless for a DSLR- especially a slow zoom. Get some primes in there. And yes the T2i is a total bargain...
