C100: Getting my hands on 2 cinema lenses for a week

I'm stoked! I'm going to test out and review the 24mm and the 85mm Canon Cinema Lenses. I've wanted to play with these ever since I saw them at NAB and they'll be in my hands by the July 3rd. First thing I'm going to shoot is a fireworks display on the 4th of July. I'm taking both the C100 with Ninja 2 and C300. Set one up for wide and the 85mm for cool bokeh shots. Should be fun. Also scrambling to find a location and subject for another test shoot. Tough week with a holiday but will find something.

Updated 7/15.

I finally got the review and editing done.

Eric: A perfect opportunity to dual record with the C100.. fireworks would be an interesting visual to compare the internal vrs Ninja on the 100 - Two tests in one.

Have a shoot lined up Thursday to do the same thing! We can see how the Canon primes match up against my Rokinons ;)

Happy shooting Erik, I enjoy reading your reviews and blog posts very much.

Very cool Nate! I just got word the Canon Cinema Primes will be here Tuesday morning!

My biggest word of caution regarding using these lenses: harden your heart! They're way too easy to fall in love with, and now I own 3 of them...

Erik,
I bought the C100 kit last week and also plan to shoot my town's fireworks display on July 4th. What do you recommend for C100 camera and lens settings for shooting fireworks?

Hi Eric

love and appreciate your reviews on the Canons.

It would be great to see some direct comparisons of the C300 @ 50mb and the C100 @ 24mb filming the same scene. After days of searching I have yet to see any definitive shots that directly contrast and compare the cameras at what they do with their onboard codecs.

:)

It's been a long time since I filmed fireworks but I would start with ISO 850. If you have a wide angle lens that would great to get the BIG picture but a 85 or longer for cool tight shots. Experiment a little. The show last a while so you have a few minutes to get it right! Good luck! We both need it. :)

Erik, I know you used the Rokinon cinema lenses on a couple of shoots - Do you still like to use them? Overall impression?

Roy

I have the 35mm and the 85mm. cine versions. They are very good and I'm keeping them both. I'm waiting for the 50mm. Please..... Soon.....

Slightly off topic but am I wrong in assuming that the C100 with Ninja2 is going to create better quality footage than the C300 shooting to Canons internal Codec? I am speaking purely of technical specs. I know the c300 is superior to the C100 when comparing internal codecs, but other than differences in LCDs, EVFs and ergonomics and PL lens options, what is the big difference when shooting to Ninja vs. internal codec of c300? I've been meaning to ask this for a while now. I originally purchased the C100 and have recently added the Ninja2, and I am curious what the C300 has over the C100/Ninja2 combo now? Assuming shooting with same lenses and all....

Thanks.

From my experience, shooting fireworks is best in slow motion and way out of focus. Seriously :) it's a cool thing to play with

Simple answer is yes. ProRes is less compressed than the Canon XF codec.

Thanks. Any chance for a more complex answer? I guess other than the internal codec, the ergonomics, the LCD and EVF differences....are there any other benefits for the C300 that contribute to the actual quality of the video? If I took a C300 and C100 and hooked ninja recorders to both, had the same lenses on both and used the identical settings.....would the C300 have some additional benefit over the c100 in regards to image quality?
