I'm still working my way to that. :)

Believe it or not, you guys impress me. Marriage is like rock climbing (for me). It looks cool, but I'll let someone else do it (too dangerous). My girlfriends (platonic) tell me once the right woman comes along, it'll make be different. I think all women say that though.

For the original guy, whatever you do, just don't spend too much on a wedding. All of my married friends kick themselves for spending so much a few years later. Just a tip.

Cheers.

PS -Shouldn't Hudson or dsjecta chime in here. Haven't they've been married since Moses? Perhaps an advice column ?

Yes I would definitely suggest not spending too much on the wedding because
1. Why spend so much ?
2. If statistically 50% of marriages end in divorce there is a high probability that you will still be paying that wedding off when you're not married to her

Wow. I'm thinking back ten years ago when my wife and I got married.
We've just had our second--and last-- kid. It's an amazing journey. We fight sometimes, we have our differences. She nags-oh yes the nagging. We seem to have completely different likes and hobbies. I like martial arts, scuba diving, and flying airplanes. She likes...gardening, sewing, ...ahh...going for walks?
Like it was already stated, it's what you make of it. When you decide to partner with someone, you both decide to work stuff out and soldier on. There are a lot of things that improve in your life quickly. You'll never forget the moment your son or daughter enters the world.

100 years ago- you had to be married so that you had someone else to work the farm. Now, 2 careers and the cost of living, not to mention raising children..responsibly... make for some different hardships. People don't have to be married any more, not like 100 years ago. I think that's why there's so many divorces. It's too easy (however painful).

Make a decision and stick with it. If you both decide to be married and make a go of it, you'll be able to weather the hard times ahead.
Good luck to you both!

Celebrate your differences.

That was some advice given to me before I got married, and it's been good advice.

The only times that my wife and I have had trouble is when one or both of us was more focused on something other than making each other happy. Put the other person first, and in an ideal relationship they are putting you first, and then everything works out.

My two cents. :)

Good luck with getting married. I have been for over a year, and my wife is cooler than shi&t. We have a hell of a lot of fun. She wanted to learn how to edit video and work a camera (free labor for me!) and is damn good at both.

I'll tell you the single most important thing: Honesty.

Yeah, it sounds cheesy, but it's true. In over a year of marriage and seven more of a relationship, we have only had ONE instance where voices were raised, and that was me who raised it. We don't fight, ever, get along famously, and never even really argue. You know why? Honesty. If there is something that needs addressed, one of us brings it up, and we talk about it. Everything from money to sex. From pets to computer purchases (for me) to buying furniture. We talk about it.

You want your marriage to work? Be honest with your wife, and don't be reluctant to tell her what’s on your mind. Make sure she does the same. Anything and everything gets addressed, and because of it, no resentment can really ever build.

And do little things. Leave a note where she will find it unexpectedly. Cook something special for no occasion. Send silly emails.

It's all pretty basic, but it's amazing how many people let their marriages fail because they don't communicate and when they do, they do so without the respect for their spouse that is warranted.

Honesty, mixed with a little respect and consideration will make any marriage work, on all fronts (including bumpin uglies). Treat it like you would a friendship and your're golden.
