Getting Jing .mp4 files into FCE?

I'm an educational technology specialist at an elementary school, and I make a lot of training videos for my teachers. I make the videos with Jing (http://www.jingproject.com/), which produces .mp4 files. How do I properly get these videos, which are either 800x600 or 1024x768, into FCE 4?

First, I can't seem to directly import them at all (File --> Import --> Files). For some reason I CAN import them into iMovie. I believe that process converts them to .mov files. After doing that, I can get them into FCE either by dragging and dropping or by using the iMovie XML export feature.

BUT, although the Jing videos look crystal clear in iMovie, they look horrible (blurred) in FCE. I believe this is because I need to have the FCE sequence frame size set to 800x600 or 1024x768 before bringing the videos into FCE, but, as noted in other posts in this forum, I only have preset frame size options from which to choose and can't specify it to be exactly 800x600 or 1024x768.

What should I do to get my Jing .mp4 videos into FCE looking as clear as they look when played in Quicktime Player or when imported into iMovie?

This is a link to a tutorial on using mpegstreamclip to convert video into editing formats

MPEGStreamclip Tutorial

Remember to convert to a format consistent with an easy set up in Final Cut Pro. Don't convert to Pal if you are in NTSC

Thank you very much, David. Now I have another problem. In MPEG Streamclip's Export to Quicktime, I've tried your suggested AppleDV_PAL as well as some others, including Apple Intermediate Codec, and if I look at the resulting file using Quicktime Player, it's fine. However, when I import it into Final Cut Express 4, I get all the video compressed into the first 10% or so of the clip. The rest is black as the audio goes on for the whole clip. There are export settings in MPEG Streamclip that don't result in this situation, like Apple Motion JPEG, I think, but they give a totally blurry, unusable picture.

Hello I saw that you said you can import Jing files into iMovie. How do you do that? I've been trying to convert the files, but it's not working for some reason.

A couple of questions:

1) Which version of OSX and which version of iMovie are you using?
2) How, exactly, have you been trying to convert the files before bringing into iMovie?

They most likely won't come into iMovie directly- get that MPEGStreamclip app and you'll have better luck.
