Getting good audio on DSLR.

I'm used to plugging my shotgun microphone into the EX1. Now I have a Canon 7D and want audio at least as good.

If I'm going to use externat microphones, say a 416, will I get better audio by recording XLR sound throught the preamps of:

Tascam D40

or

Zoom H4

or should I use another recorder?

Sound quality wise, how do these compare to the built in pre-am of an EX1 Camera?

So I assume you are already aware of the 7D's audio limitations.

The Zoom H4N (as opposed to just the H4) is a favorite here with DSLR shooters, however I don't know how any of this compares to the EX1's internal sound. For this and other sound related questions, I highly recommend taking this discussion over to the audio section here:

Unless I am mistaken, you aren't asking anything camera-specific to Canon DSLRs, right?

The Zoom H4n has a pretty good built-in mic, but the preamps are very weak and using phantom power will drain the batteries very quickly, whereas the EX1 can power a mic for a while. I suspect the Tascam will have the same problem of underpowered preamps.
