C100: Getting Files Off the SDHC Card

With my 7D, I usually just move the video files off the CF card onto my HD for editing using a cheap USB dock. The 7D "remembers" the number used on the files and doesn't start over at 0001 each time. I also don't format the CF card.

With my C100, I have a much more complicated directory structure and am not sure what the best procedure is for getting the video files onto my HD for editing (Win7, CS6). I have been formatting the SDHC card each time to create a new directory structure. My filename number also has been going back to 0001 each time (which is something I would like to avoid so that I don't have a bunch of "0001"s on my HD).

What is the proper procedure for getting the files off my SDHC card and onto the HD while preserving the filename numbering sequence?

Thanks!

The problem is with the AVCHD format. It needs consecutive numbering for files, begining with 0001.MTS (or something like that).

The idea was that an AVCHD camcorder would record what was in effect a BluRay compatible structure from the get-go. You Film, you shove it into your player, and you watch.

Two approaches:

1) Make a verbatim disk image and catalogue that. So, you're not cataloging a whole bunch of 00001.mts style files.

2) Archive the converted files, renamed using your favourite batch renamer

I like using #2, but of course I've lost all the metadata. Now, there's not many bits of software that capture the metadata at the moment, so 'whatever'. Having said that, if I were shooting anything that would have value in 2-10 years hence, I'd be very reticent to discard all that metadata.

At the moment, I must hang my head in shame by admitting to use FCPX, which will archive SDHC cards with metadata (even if it can't read the bloody stuff) and then I can batch name within the app, but I still prefer the 'convert via 5dtoRGB/ClipWrap and rename using Renamer' approach.

Unless you want to preserve metadata (in case you're still a bit confused), just copy the files in the STREAM folder to wherever you want them on your HD, then batch rename. CS6 will import the renamed .mts files just fine. However, if you prefer to retain the metadata, you can copy the whole PRIVATE folder, but you can't rename the files. They can be seen in the media browser in CS6 if you go this route, but I find having a zillion files with the same name in a project unworkable, so bye-bye metadata for me. I also do a quick reformat in the camera each time I load up a card, BTW.

if you dont mind me asking - what is the right way to import files into Premier for editing? i just start learning PP ..... for now i do a hand drop files into time line...

I do an old fashioned import from the pulldown menu usually. L8ly I have been using a lot of bins and have started right clicking on the bin and importing media directly into the bin. I suspect there's probably 100 "right" ways to do most anything in Premier though. ;)

Clone the entire disk image. :)
